When would I need DSMLink?

I am about to purchase a 1G GSX, the guy says that the car can handle about 20psi the way it sits now (ive seen the parts list and searched the boards and would say hes about right)

But if I buy this car turn it to 18psi, will it run that "safely" without anysort of engine management?

I guess my question is: what can the ECU handle stock... When would I need to use an SAFC... and when would i need to jump up to DSM Link...

The car will probably stay like it is right now, slightly built block and supporting mods that should be good for a little under 300hp, until I get all the maintenance/small problems taken care of. So would I be okay running it at about 17psi with no management? If not what psi could I run with no management. Or would a SAFC be sufficient for 17psi.

THANK YOU!

www.apexi-usa.com used to have them on thier sites. I have seen it, that is why I put it on my post. My buddy with a 90 TSi AWD, on here as well, has it, but he doesn't like it, he has been trying to find a laptop since he bought link then... He has a small PDA, I believe an apple brand, but I am not sure. I don't have Link setup like that with my setup, I have a laptop and a usb/db9 converter, and that's it. That is all you will need for that... And rule #3, whatever, I gave him great advice. I HAVE SEEN IT AND HEARD IT... I have it, I have used it (and still do) and I gave him my experience, and everyone elses is different obviously. I am talking about NEW, NOT USED, not Hacked to hell with a shitty harness, I don't like to buy things old and used, unless they have a warranty. Yeah, I sold my old SAFC II setup for about 250, with a new harness and both manuals for it. I highly doubt some of these people selling this stuff out of thier garages really know what they have, most do, but some don't...

I am not going to argue with a "WISEMAN" since he is a DSM guru, I don't know shit then... compared to a DSM God... but I said my part in helping a fellow Hoosier out...

and you can learn something from someone else. "The "wisest" mind has still something yet to learn from his fellow man." I forgot who said that, but credit is deserved.

I am still talking about used and abused parts, not new ones. And the original price is still 439.00 and with thier deal, it is 299.00, with shipping charges, it will be more, depending on the state. So that is not 200 or less... I would rather buy new ones, not used ones unless I saw pics and it is in writing, or they had some great feed back and could be trusted

There's no point in arguing when it's obvious you're wrong. The prices you listed were outrageously high, I provided links to prove it. I don't know if you're drunk or high or what, but your posts are getting more and more confusing as the day goes on. Try to form your thoughts completely before you type them.

What? I am not wrong, i just counteracted what you posted, and you had said. Not too many people can get on LINK forums anyway. I read the links, I saw the prices, and those are for used items, except the extremepsi link, they were stuff guys had for spare or lying around. Don't you F#$%^%& call me high or drunk, don't accuse me of doing drugs, I am drug free and proud of it, and you don't even know me. That is technically an insult, cause its in my perception of what you called me, and I took offense to that.

And what prices were high? Link, no, it is $595, if you get the socketing service done by them, if not, its $565. I showed the link to directly from Tom's site. And you showed me the link from Xpsi, and yeah, its $299, but the original BRAND NEW price is still $439, not including shipping or sales tax either. And look around here and other DSM oriented sites, they are still kind of shady, but how can you really tell what you are gettin from another member? He could be scamming, he could be legit, but an ECU is something that I would only buy from a REPUTABLE vendor, with or without a warranty, not Joe Schmoe here on Tuners. Look, no hard feelings, just let it go...

true, those were the prices when i ran a palm m505/safc2. the safc was 350+50 shipping from ebay, and the palm was 150$+50$ for other shit.

socketed eproms were 300$ on ebay as well.

i hear the PDA version of dsmlink has a slower transfer rate for logging, dont know how true that is but i remember i hated the small ass screen on the palm, plus you can impress all your buddies when you tune like bryan spilner with a laptop in your car.

See? Someone else has seen this firsthand. That 2.5" game boy sized screen on some PDA's are nothing compared to a 17" laptop screen. And he said the unforgiving rule #3, " I've heard" but not trying to dime you out bro. Just pointed this out. And I didn't know about the transfer rate being slower, but I will ask my buddy or do a side by side comparision.

I I bought my eprom from ebay for 200 bones socketed. I know a frined who has done the same. I've seen them sell for that before on ebay and other sources. It happens. Anyone who wants to pay more is not patient enough. . . Now I've seen them go for that much but usually they ahve ther caps replaced at the very least.

Unless you go with the SAFC-Logger combo? That is crazy, DSMlink is then only "Standalone" engine management system that uses your factory ECU to do everything that a standalone does, just more user friendly, and easier to read to tune. I have helped some of my friends on theirs, a PMS, an AEM EMS, and when I first started to read and help tune those, man, it was rocket science at first, but then you can do it with time, and DSMlink, I had no questions, just on how to get it to link and capture, thats it.
Speed Density setup That's another fact that's not straight. . . ECU+ logs and keeps the stock ecu. It also has ALMOST as much functionality as DSMLink.

Well, I don't know if your 'high or drunk' either. May be you just don't research as well as others. But I'll try to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that your reasoning has been impared. . . Unless you can admit that your reseach has not yielded the same results. Just because you missed something doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. That thinking is illogical.

A man was walking down the street and saw another, who reaked of liquor, on his hands and knees under a street light mumbling, "It's just gone."
The first questioned, "Pardon me. Do you need any help?
The drunk replied, "Well i lost my wallet?
The first asked, "Where at did it fall?"
The drunk, "Well, " Hickup. "It fell out of my pocket up the street but it's so much brighter down here."

My research on the link forums shows that everyone is fine w/ the screen view of the palm when graphing (or making visible) timing retard and 1 or 2 other variables. My scanmaster only shows up to two variables at once. And That's all i need to see how my fuel/timing tune is after I modify it. . . A laptop is NOT needed. Anything more is preference.

No one has complained about the sample rate yet. . .
