i kno throwing a fmic on a stock turbo with stock psi is kinda pointless cause all u will do is lose volume and increase turbo lag. but i want to start building my dsm soon once i get it up and running again like im going to maft as a first mod. but thats off topic. when is a good time to consider going to a front mount? or do i even need to? could i jst put a bigger higher performance side mount in? im not big on flashin my turbo-ness around. LOL. Maybe a noob question but what is a sleeper? not relevant to this post but i was curious LOL

When you're going to install some semi-serious mods I'd say think about a front mount. Something like a bigger turbo, injectors, fuel control etc. Currently I run a Supra sidemount. A very popular mod. But you are right, right now you have no need for a front mount.

As to what a "sleeper" is, it is when a car looks stock but has mods. People like to mess with tuners and sometimes will try to show off against stock cars. Then they get beat and wonder why. Fine example of a sleeper car.

right on thanks that helps a little.

thats what i figured a sleeper was LOL i jst didnt wanna assume and be proven wrong haha.

at what psi would it even out against turbo lag with a front mount? i kno it varies with every setup but what have other ppl done?

:tease: Yeah, just like when evos and subies tried to pick on me in an RS and get walked. Anywho, i just put a fmic on my gsx and my mods are few with 17psi but a e3 is in the mail. I,m sure i didn't need it but if not now then very soon.

PSI will have nothing to help with lag. the only thing you can do for lag off of a launch would be some type of anti lag.

haha thats why i like keeping it stock looking so nobody see's it comin

You don't necessarily need to get a FMIC. It depends on what your goals are for in the future and what turbo you'll be getting. Your other route for sleeper look could be installing a supra SMIC or similar SMIC. Plus you can also get meth/ water injection kit. I would suggest getting boost gauge, mbc, injectors, fuel pump, afpr, dsmlink or ecmlink, full 3" turboback exhaust, port o2 housing, port exhaust manifold or get aftermarket one, upgrade turbo, and tune the car before you would need a FMIC.

Look at the top of the webpage and you'll see the "TECH" section, click on that and then click on "Upgrade Paths." I'm sure you'll find a lot of useful information there.

Sounds good but without the MBC. I personally don't like them as with 2 different ones i had boost drop off even with a 60mm turbo. WTF

Do you already have intercooler pipes setup to run MAFT, or are you buying new ones. If your buying new ones for maft you might as well upgrade to a FMIC, just so you don't have to buy intercooler pipes twice. Yes you will lose lag, but you wont spend money later on. Also look into maybe a ETS kit where later on you just have to change one pipe for your new turbo down the road.

An MBC is simple as it gets. It's not like an EBC would work any better to prevent boost drop off. If you're boost is dropping off, either your BOV is leaking, your wastegate can't hold the pressure, you have a boost leak, or you're getting out of the efficiency range of your turbo.

Unless you like heatsoaking your IC and melting your pistons from the extra detonation due to the rediculously hot air intake temps, I suggest replacing the stock smic with an evo 8 fmic. Theyre effiecient/cheap/reliable. There is no reason what so ever to keep the stock smic. Its true people can run pretty quick 1/4 times on them but thats one or two passes before intake temps start to get in the way.

You can paint a fmic black if you dont want it be flashy. I have an air to water ic setup for the same reason.

Good post. I'm just about to make the FMIC switch, but this car has been running a Supra SMIC for years on a SCM61.

thanks for all the impute guys. i will ###### upgrade with my maft jst to save money on pipes and stuff. plus all this talk about heat soaking it makes me uncomfortible LOL. do the evo 10's intercoolers fit. i think you could make them my buddy is starting to upgrade his evo and im ###### gonna score some parts off him. front mount, injectors ect.

Negatory, the turbo was more than too big for the measly 300hp or so and a simple switch to a Blitz EBC corrected the problem. I tried the same thing when i first got the gsx and the same results. My only explanation was the spring inside the controller warms up while boosting and get a bit softer. I used a Turbonetics mbc, the regulator type, not the spring and bearing as well as a knock-off one and both failed. The gsx would drop to 13psi by RL and the blitz holds true the whole way.

I've never heard of anyone using it, but I'm sure you can MAKE it fit :thumb:

550cc plus injectors and a 16g turbo or bigger would require a front mount..

Negative. I run both a 16g and 550cc injectors, all I use is a Supra sidemount. A front mount isn't required till something bigger than that. Sure a front mount would help me even more but it's not required at this point.

Injector and turbo size does not define the necessity of a FMIC. I had the same setup I have now minus the FMIC and cams for quite a while (couple years or so) with no issues, and it did 340fwhp and 380torque on a Dyno Dynamics dyno at around 24-25psi.

You are correct. really you never need a FMIC, But if you are looking to make the system more efficient then FMIC your heart out.

Just run it on Ethanol with meth/water injection and No intercooler ROFL
A FMIC ???
thats pretty vague theres tons of intercoolers out there from a DIY/Ebay setup to a custom FMIC Kit.
Bottom line at some point you will be constantly heatsoaking (Maybe not now) your IC and will have to move onto a more efficient setup ...IMHO if you goto a FMIC your not gonna see anymore lag your only gonna have colder Air temps...Last Time I checked Cooled air charge = more dense air ...which = ???:D

Also someone that posted above said to just get it painted black...I dont agree with that unless you get it anodized or get this special heat dispersing paint (which will actually make your intercooler work better. I am probably sending mine off today for this so ill let you know how it goes)
