when do you shift?

Typically a good range is 3-5k. But you need to a count other possible concerns, if you have done any (performance) and/or (hard on it) wise changes. If not, then you should be fine.

I shift at 2000rpm and that's a decent acceleration. I've got 510 miles out of a tank of gas (16 gal). I only put pure gas 87 with no ethanol added. Tire pressure at 40psi.

Anything over 2000 rpms is probably a safe bet w/o bogging it. Or just listen to the engine and experiement a little. Shift low and see at what point the engine bogs (which is detrimental). My Mazda didn't come with a tach, so I'm used to just listening when to shift. Keep your eyes on the road, not the tach! ;)

A lot of 4 cylinders are designed to be revved high, that's where their power band is. In comparison to an 8 cylinder which generally has much lower end torque and redlines around maybe 5000 rpms which is where a 4-banger comes alive.

And I drive my n/t Laser with a 4g63 pretty hard, revving around 4500k regularly. Even then, I can crank out a minimum of 350 miles from a tank.

With mine i did 3-3.5k. Anything lower and my car would bog. My aim was to keep my rpms between 2.5-3.5k. Until i got boosted. Then i pretty much said economy be damned! Vroooooom chuuuuuuu

That's what I postet a couple of weeks ago:

That is how I shift:

1st to 2nd: 2.5 - 3k
2nd to 3rd: 2.5 - 3k
3rd to 4th: 2 - 2.5k
4th to 5th: 2k

Cruising at 1.5k to 2k rpm, Autobahn with 3k-3.5k (70 to 80mph with cruise control)

After 30k miles of driving my car I always get about 28-30mpg including some high speed sessions on highways. The best I ever got were 37mpg with nearly a complete tank emptied on the highway (over 400miles of driving) :thumb: I bet there is more potential for saving gas, but that are some solid numbers and I am happy with that.

If you really wanna improve your mpg, you should do several things to your car. Try to use thin oil (like 5W30 or 10W30 - not recommended when you race your car). the lighter oil will help your engine turn easier. Drive with eco-tires like Michelin Energy Saver. Get rid of all your junk in your trunk. A lighter vehicle needs less power to be moved. That are only a couple of advices. There are tons of other tricks to save gas. But always remember: our cars are more than 13 years old. you can't get a gas milage of an prius - unless you put an electric motor in your engine bay ;-)

At what rpm do you guys shift your n/t 5 speed manuals? I'm talking economically. I'm trying to get the best mpg possible.

When your trying to be a hardazzz on the highway(when you want to go fast LOL). A good condition 420a stock can shift at 6800 rpm. Lol just had to throw that out there.
