When do you shift? [Merged 7-8] points shifting revs point

WHat is the highest shift point you guys with built heads are shifting at? I'm looking to spinn this thing to 8k if I can because my turbo setup I'm in the process of putting together will be a little laggy. Is anyone shifting that high with success?

Right now, my set-up wants to shift 1 to 2 at a little past 8k. I have been having a problem with that on the speed shift. If I lift, no problem but no NLTS. Now at 2 to 3 I can speed shift but I am just under (or at) 8k. I'm not positive that its the tranny or the linkage etc. but I am starting to lean toward the tranny.

Yeah I thought I heard you say that in a nother thread I was thinking 8k would be about the limit. I have two issues I'm just taking into account the rpm right now the power will be a factor too. Like I heard that these trans don't like spinning even 450whp up to high. I was hoping for a 8k 1-2 7800 2-3 and 7.5k or abouts 3-4th

Well, get your car on a dyno, and see where the power band starts to taper off.

My power band has the horsepower getting ready to drop again right after 7grand. So I have my limit set to 7500.

I guess it depends on the rest of your setup, turbo ect. But I would agree with you that 8grand is probably limit

I don't want to speculate or give away my setup plans just yet but it will def make power up at and most likely above 7500 just by the turbo and the cam selection. I was just curious if any big boost guys were getting away with spinning it that high without breaking anything. My biggest worry is the trans and axles as everything else is fully built to handle anything I throw at it.

Hey im 17 and i just got this car and i never drove a stick. i just want to know when i should be shifting? is there a diffrence when to shift like if your going slow compared to when you take off fast? thanks (5 speed)

Shifting a higher rpms is for launching. I'd check out some videos on YouTube. It's better to take it easy as a beginner. Assuming you have a stock clutch and transmission you'll easily destroy the clutch and the transmission synchros.

Driving normally, you should shift at around 3000 rpms or below. If you are going for a fast acceleration through the gears, shift at about 6000 rpm's if your car is stock.

Just make sure that you press the clutch in all the way. If you are really "getting on it" you don't have to slip the clutch that much at all after the 1st shift.

There are fancier techniques but thats not your question. Peace bro.

just shift when the car starts to make funny noises.:p no but i shift around 3k for better fuel economy but if u want to wind it out a little bit you should shift around 6k to 6500. thats if you have the stock turbo on because after that it pretty much dies.

Pull the little line to the wastgate, and go launch at redline, shift above 7k, o yea and if it starts bucking or fuel cutting keep into it, its just... um.. adjusting to the new boost setting. :)

why would you say something like this in the newbies forum? What a dick.

On a car thats running right, under 3k is fine.

First off... stop speeding and launching the car cause your gf thinks its cool, or to show off.
You don't want to be walking to your pizza delivery job because you burnt your clutch or snaped a timing belt.

Maintain it first, all the money your going to make this summer will go to your car, and it should be running this winter.
I would at the very least change spark plugs and oil, and stay on this site for about the next year reading through all of it.

Don't break it before you can fix it yourself.

Very sound advice. The whole girlfriend thing is spot on, I watched a guy with his GF in his RX-7 destroy his clutch and 3rd gear trying to be a BA, and now he gets to walk her to school and back haha ROFL. Just treat the car right, and go easy until you get a feel for how to drive it. Soon enough youll hear when you need to shift without looking at the tach too much. I shift at 3000-3500 personally on day to day trips. :dsm:

since your just learning to drive standard i wouldnt try and race the car. or atleast not until you learn how to drive a little better than you do now. by tryin to race now u can miss a gear and hear this nasty grind. hearing this alone has made some of my friends not want to drive standard more or less made me not let them drive my car again. another thing will prob happen is there is a pretty good chance after you learn you will need a new clutch. not saying your a bad driver but it sometimes does take alot to get used to driving with 2 feet vs 1. that would be one of the first investments i would put into thecar once you get better at driving it. i recommend you just taking it slow and practicing. you will have your time to race. believe me.

i know how the 2nd gear synchro works. they suck. i blew my transmission cause of it. the trans i have in now the 2nd gear syncho is going to. since my car is now off the road i am going to rebuild the trans. already rebuilding the 420a. alot of work ahead of me.

I shift mine about 2500 when im tryng to save gas LOL when im racing i redline but i got a bigger turbo so its still pulling u will get used to driving fast taking off was the only hard part for me dont take long and u will be driving like a pro and if ## car starts cutting out dont keep in the gas like the other guy said its cuttin out for a reason have fun :thumb:

also if u need anything just ask this is the best site ive seen u can post questions at any hours and they get answered fast love dsm and the site

You'd be surprised how much power and time you lose shifting at the redline. First time I hooked my car up to a computer and ran timeslips on the street, I was clocking, at minimum, 6.7s 0-60. That's a full second slower than spec'd time. I was averaging low 7s 0-60. Now, shifting at 6k, I'm in the low 6s, with my crappy tranny being the reason for not being faster.

Not only does the power drop past 6k, the car loses momentum, which will carry the car between gears. If you shift too high, your momentum starts to die, and the next gear has to pick that up after the shift, and it takes more torque to do that effectively. Basically, the higher you shift, the longer your shift needs to take to hit your torque peak and make up for the momentum loss. Overall, you're losing time in 3 different places, and that's just on a basic level. There's more to it than that. But I'll leave it off there, as that should be sufficient.
