What's wrong with an internally gated 50 trim?

quebec,
Hey!

I'm on the market for a 50 trim, and was having a discussion with fellow dsmers yesterday night about internally gated weastegates used in conjunction with them turbos... I still don't understand why exactly it's a better idea to get an external wastegate for a 50 trim rather than a big flapper (much less expensive than an external setup).

We've seen high HP and low ET cars with internal wastegates on big turbos, so why then is a 50 trim supposed to be too big for an internal wastegate? Or are they another urban legends floating around?!?

Anyway... any info would be appreciated! :rocks:

First off, 50 trims are not to big for internal gates.
I currently run 21psi daily with mine, internally gated. I have ZERO issues with it. I could even lower my boost and hold it steady at 16psi.
To be able to achieve this, I think the you need to do the bare minimum:
1. Port out a 2g or evo III O2 housing and completely port matched everything.

This should completely controlled any creep/spike that you may otherwise encounter.

Problems you may see with an internal:
1. Creep/spike(proper porting and port matching will fix this)
2. At higher boost levels, some have had the larger flapper doors blow open. I have yet to see this on mine at 21 psi.

Hands down, an external is by far the best to have. Can you run a 50 trim with an internal and have zero problems? Yes you can.

Instead of rehashing a ton of threads, just do a search on internal wastegates and external. You'll have enough reading to last a long time...LOL

Good luck

I ran my ETE32 for over a year with no issues. I had the 39mm adjustable internal wastegate and 3" o2 eliminator DP. Ran 23 psi on pump with no issues of creeping/spiking.
well mine sucks imo its a P.I.T.A to adjust because of the bracket and the fans crowding it and i have adjusted mine both ways and still can not find a set boost if anybody knows what im doing wrong feel free to let me know!

Not to mention, one person running 11psi (which is worthless) and another running 21psi isn't a very good gauge of an internal gate. The 50 trim really hits its effeciency range at 20-27psi. So trying to get a good tune or run high boost at the track is much more difficult on an internal gate then an external. You made a comment about the added price but I'd rather spend the extra small money for an external then to purchase an internally gated, have crazy problems controlling the boost and end up selling it.

I dont have a 50 trim but I do have an internally gated 60-1. Holds boost pefect at 24 psi on pump on the street and 28psi at the track(race gas of course). I dont see why a 50 trim would have problems if my larger turbo doesnt. Im also running a 2.5" tubular o2 and 3" from there. Wg is routed back into the o2, no dump for me.

I have a PTE 50 Trim internally gated Turbo. No boost creep spike or anything with a stock 2G manifold and a Stock 2G 02 sensor. Ran it with a 2.5" turbo back exhaust too with no problems what so ever in the creep department.

Its also forsale when it comes back from beind rebuilt from PTE cheap too :thumb:

Its on the way there now I bought a new setup and Im selling this turbo without installing it.

I fogot to mention I have dual stage boost control 15 psi most days 20 psi if Im in the right mood no probs with either setting wtih this turbo. Dsmjim can vouch for it he has ridden in my car with that turbo installed.
