Hey everybody! Been looking to get a car to go to the races with and after working in a shop for a year i decided on a dsm. My master michanic is definitely a dsm enthusiast but I'd like to get more than his opinion. I fell for the rounder body style i think it's the 2g. I've been told to go for 90 91 92 year because the others get crank walk. I've heard the 1st Gen has something w the computer also that makes it better to modify. So what I'm asking is does the round body style come in the year 90 91 and 92 w the 7 bolt and all the more reliable component's for modification or do you have to get the 2g and add those things to your build? Really wondering about the computer differences i heard about. Yall know michanics knoledge is valuable so i always get vauge answers haha. I appreciate any feed back! Looking to make an educated purchase for my first dsm to put all my energy into thanks again !

IMO the 2g's have the best body style of all the Eclipse' ever made. But as far as the crankwalk goes, you are correct.
Putting components from a 1g into a 2g sounds like a great idea, until you get started. That's just alot of time and work when you could just drive the 1g. And you can just do a quick search on 1g ecu vs. 2g ecu.

So if I'm talking opinion I would tell you to buy a 2g straight up, but logically a 1g would be best.

And also, what type of races are you going to? Have you read through their rules and restrictions?

While I like the body style of my 98 Talon A LOT, I like a little more room that I have in my 90 and 92's along with stronger running gear and 6 bolt motors. But its all an opinion. My son takes 7 bolts, puts big turbos and injectors in them and runs them. If you are doing drag racing, look for the AWD models, again, IMO.
That's what we do a lot of and they are hard to catch, as they come out of the hole with minimal tire spin.
Good luck, glad to have you on the forum Damien, and I am sure there will be more input from these knowledgeable guys and gals! We don't mind sharing info on this forum, we encourage it in fact. :thumb:

Thanks guys! if i go this rout id probably shoot for one them awd 2g talons look pretty sweet and then build that with the 7 bolt for best of both worlds since they don't come together. The races I'm looking to go to are just the local weekend meets here in Denver they have nation wide and 1320 about every weekend. But i Wana get something i can take to the real races at the track one day later on not looking for instant gratification or easy quick car. Been looking at the awd aws 3000 gt lately and looks like you guys have them on this page too. Wondering if anybody owned both I'm curious cuz they say the 3000 is heavy but doesn't feel like it cuz awd aws but the talon weighs less and more reliable 4g63 and more room to work in the engine bay. I'm sure it comes down to opinion and what you want in a car. I'm looking for a good weekend worroir drag race roll race but also takes corners in the rocky mountains. Just trying to pick your brains cuz you guys have the experience i dont so i really appreciate the feed back

Your 2g models will come with a 7 bolt motor (7 bolts hold the flywheel on). The stronger engine, internally and stock, are the 6 bolt motors with beefier rods, just for clarification. You can beef up a 7 bolt though so no problem there.
Those 3000gt/Stealth cars, while neat, are a real biotch to work on as you noticed how crowded the engine bay is.

Oh yup haha thanks for clarifying that sounds like more bolts would be better but i just looked up what crank walk is and I'm getting a better picture of the gens of these dsm cars thanks again

welcome to the forum, and congrats on picking your speed fix! one of the best communities and most knowledgeable/informative on the planet as far as im concerned!

as for the years, 90-94 are 1Gs split into 1GA for 90-91, and 1GB for 92-94. 90s are a bit of an oddball as far as some of the electronics and hardware, but have the best AWD manual transmissions for stock units.

95-99 are 2Gs, split into 2GA for 95-96, and 2GB for 97-99. once again, 95s are different in some aspects compared to other 2Gs, and 98-99 had "blackbox" ecus that are more similar to Evo 8-9 ecus, which can use ECUflash and Evoscan for tuning/logging. there isnt quite as much support for blackbox ecus, but theres a fair amount of info and people running them with great success.
the rest have metal-cased ecus and come in either Eprom or non-Eprom, Eprom being the more desirable so you can have ECMlink put a chip into them allowing flash tuning and live logging. you can (or were able to) have a non-Eprom converted to use the Eprom chip for some extra cost for all the same capabilities of an Eprom (i had this done with mine.)

2Gs are the curvier, fast-and-furious body style, 1Gs more wedge shaped and what i like to call "street-fighter-ish".

1Gs up to around 92.5 had 6 bolt motors for turbo models, and are some of the more sought after motors, while the 7 bolts had i think 3 iterations through the remaining 1Gs and 2Gs, the "split thrust" block from the 98-99 (i believe?) being the more sought after 7 bolt. crank walk is very relative to how quality the build is done, as well as clutch selection (pressure plate poundage etc.)

theres mountains more information, but depending on what you pick you can find a way to make just about any of it work well. ask any questions and we'll all try to help you out!

Thanks brother that clears a lot up for me! I'd always ask in the shop what the best cheap fastest car ya know I'd always get the same two answers either all cars are shit or get what you like and make it fast. Haha but know I'm getting a really good idea of where to start and what to look for in a purchase thanks again man

1g is the place to be. You don't want a bubbly, curvy ride. Stick with the more masculine, more powerful and better built 1g.
