In memory of my best friend i am starting to convert a 91 4g63 6 bolt GS into and GSX. I know its possible but im looking for some help on what is all needed in the project. So far i have a awd transmission, t3 turbo kit, and looking into ecu and wire harness from a GSX. i know i will need a rear end, and driveshaft. wil i need to do any mods to the steering or front end componets. Also i havnt looked under a GSX in years so will i need to swap the fuel tank? money is not a problem so i dont care if it cost more then buying a GSX its a project we started befor he died. just wanted to know all the parts ill need to swap?:dsm:

From what ive read, no one does an AWD conversion ona 1g ...or at least no where ive read. 2g's are very common and easier to do

Reason being is that the 1g AWD and FWD are completely different chassis in the rear (if im correct)

I give you mad props for trying to finish what your friend started :thumb: but unless you really mean "money doesnt matter" then your actually better off buying a GSX

That makes sense just get a gsx, im going to love my fwd, but i want awd so ill be looking for one rather than the expense, and craziness that follows that swap. Goood luck.

If your going to do this you need a whole car! Most people just buy a gsx. You can usually find one with a bad motor or trans for cheap. I am about to send another one to the scrap yard (gone to a 2g project instead). But if you want a list, here is the best I cando off hand:
Front sub-frame
Front suspension
transmisson
transfercase
drive shaft
rear sub frame
rear suspension
rear axle
rear drive shafts
front drive shaft
all break calipers
wire harness
turbo
exhaust manifold
turbo back exhaust
fuel tank
fuel pump
rear floor pan
welder to weld rear floor plan
turbo mass air flow sensor
turbo water pipe
turbo oil pan
turbo oil lines
will need to cut and intall bolts nessicary to bolt sub frames up

Good luck if you do this let us know how it turns out.

thanks for the info guys the cars in paint right now ill let you know how its going when i return home in march. ill also add some pics of the project. since it looks like i'm the first to do this ill post my exp. with it. and thanks for the idea of getting a junk car for parts.:dsm:

lots of work but post some pics when you get her done or in process its shouldnt be to hard if you have all the right stuff you need and tools sounds fun!

Good luck to you but the chassis codes are different. I think the 1g FWD is the D22A and the AWD is the D23A or something like that. I read it many years ago so this is all that comes to mind. You will be doing lots of cutting, fabbing, scraping, and welding. You could easily go FWD turbo but AWD is going to require some real talent. Are you good at MIG welding, or do you at least own a welder? I hope you're really good at taking measurements and changing around suspension parts. What else did I miss?:tease:

yes i do have a welder and i can weld. i also have a shop of endless tools and time and funding for the car.:dsm:

Shouldn't be too hard, yet no one has did it in the almost 20 years our cars have been around. I sure no one has ever had this idea. Right...

Over the years I have read dozens of threads like this were people claimed they were going to be the first. No one has ever did it. Do yourself a favor and scrap the idea, there is no point. For the time and money you will have spent you could have built something much better. It is not cost effective, which is the best thing about a 1g awd, the bang for your buck. Unless your only point is to prove your fabrication skills. Then I could see it.

I do not want to sound rude, but I have wasted lots of time and money on projects that were ill planned from the beginning. That is what the forums our for: to help others, and to share the knowledge that we have learned from our personal mistakes.

On a side note, I have a gsx shell that I am selling for $300. They are out there. I would turbo your engine, buy a roller, drop in your engine, and source the awd drivetrain.

thanks for all your help guys. i just picked up a 91 gsx with a bad transfer case for $400 here in vegas. so i will be picking it up this and start scraping the parts for the memory project. i cant give up on this conversion due to the fact the gs was my best friends car and his dad gave it to me when he died last year.:dsm:

If you did go through with this I believe you would be the 3rd person to successfully complete this conversion. RRE did this a while ago and noted how much of a pain in the a$$ it was. Another member on this forum did the AWD conversion and had countless time in fabricating. Have fun.:|
