What's is this noise? Lifters? Worse? (video link inside)

Below is a link, notice how the ticking noise goes away and comes back. Any ideas what could be casuing this? I think it might be where some of my lower rpm/part throttle knock is coming from. I started filming right after starting the car from a cold start. Sounds like it coming from the head, but since I have a 99 I'm not sure if the lifters could be at fault.

The ticking sounds like lifters to me. They do tend to quiet down once the engine warms up. Do you have good oil pressure? Is your oil clean? How manny miles on that engine?

mine sounds just like that, i have a bad exhaust leak from the manifold also though which makes mine sound worse, or that could be the ticking. Mine quiets down a bit once its warmed up but never goes away. Ive been told a few times it sounds like lifters.

Yes jack that is the DSM lifter noise for sure. I know you run M1 10/30 I would try the M1 15/40 turbo diesel truck with a K&N filter. I ran that in my last motor and worked exellent.
Its not rod knock for sure. You would know it!! Rod knock is slower and has more of a thud sound.
Try that oil I bet that will cure your problem.

Hey Kris! long time no see.

As a side note, I also noticed too that once the rpms get high, around 6000ish the boost kinda jumps up and down 2-3 psi. This could just be an issue with the vibrations of the car causing th needle to move, but I'm not sure.

Partial throttle kock thing as been goin on for a while, while the boost issue seems to have been going on for 8-12 months. I did a boost leak test, replaced the exhaust mannifold gasket, and turbo gaskets. Nothing seemed to help, although the turbo gasket did need to be replaced becuase it cracked in half.

I think I might do a leak down test tomorrow. Maybe I have a bent valve or something? It's odd how it can tick then just stop...

LOL all worried about lifter tick. ehh no big deal. Mine seems to go away after a 5k rev but Always comes back. Nothing at all to worry about. If you own a 4g63 you know about lifter tick.

Main problem is that I think it's causeing more frequent partial throttle knock. It's not fun when you pull out on the road and all your timing is pulled because the knock sensor picke up 15-30 counts of knock.

Have your link tune it out. Under knock have it not read any knock below 3500 rpm and 50% throttle. WOT knock is what you have to worry about

Did you try a diffrent boost gauge? Is it mechanical or electric?? If its mechanical its a possitblity that the tube going to the boost gauge has a hole in it.
Also have you put a small washer between the WG and the turbo. This holds the WG door shut harder and allows the 16g turbos to hold high boost with out a drop off.
I would not worry about the knock its just the lifters. If its really bothering you put a set of the 3mm lifters in if you dont already have them.

It's mechanical and the source is from the intake mannifold. The line is ok. It's rock steady till I get up to about 5500-6000 rmps then it starts to flutter. No boost leaks.

I tuned out the knock in link a bit, but doesn't seem to be enough at times, so I'll have to tweek that some more. Atleast helps till I can get the issue resolved completely.

Hopefully it run fine like this for another year or so. I'll try the slightly thicker oil though and perform a leak down test just to be safe.

I wonder is just one of the lifters is failing or worn...

Thanks!

Tune the link knock so it only reads above 50-60% throttle. Click on knock in your promps section and it will allow you to make that adjustment.
About your boost problem I would get another boost gauge. Look into STRI gauges they are awsome and affortable.

Well I replaced the lifters with the 3rd gen ones which I got from extreme psi. Also purchased the removal tool too which made it a really easy to remove and replace the lifters. The car is much quieter now. I noticed that one lifter did happen to have some darker oil bleed out of it. My guess is that lifter was the problem one.

Also my boost issue appears to be resolved now too. I only made a couple runs to redline, but the boost wasn't jumping up and down 1-2 psi like it was before. :hellyeah:

FYI those 3rd gen lifters looked a bit different from by 99. They both had larger holes but the that was about it...

Hey Chris I'm still on 10/30 but what did you notice when going with the 5/40? Notice any slight decrease in lag, etc?

Jack I did not notice any diffrence in lag at all. Synthetic 10/30 is to thin for or cars IMO.
