Whats a good Engine to put in a 97 GS?

Lets do some math shall we?

8 psi over 14.7 pounds for natural atmospheric pressure = .5442
140 stock hp times .5442 = 76.188 hp gain
76.188 gain + 140 stock = 216.188 hp.

now thats only at 8 psi compared to the 13 or so that a stock GS-T runs. so your already faster. now spend a couple hundred on new rods and pistons, crank up the boost, and you have a beast.

The information you have given aren't facts. Don't spread information that you do not have first-hand experience with.

This thread is leaning towards another "NT vs Turbo" war, so try to post info/suggestions that are related to the thread starter's question, "Whats a good Engine to put in a 97 GS?"

I would assume the higher horsepower is because of the higher compression, which will mean the amount you can crank up the boost will be limited even with built up internals.

Just because the math says you have more horsepower doesn't mean the car will end up faster then a GST or GSX. Thats like me saying a 500 horsepower viper should be almost twice as fast as a 281 horsepower evo MR. Yet there quarter mile is damn close. So many factors including gear ratios, weight, TRACTION, and power ACROSS THE RPM RANGE means peak horsepower means almost nothing.. Plus is throwing on 8 lbs of boost mean your going to have the fuel throughout the RPM range and will it be tuned perfectly? the 4G63 gets a great torque curve and isn't a dyno queen like some supras etc. If your making peak 216 horses will it be throughout the RPM range or will it just peak for a short time. Not trying to flame you cause I respect anyone that turbos there car and is into performance. But to say you will be faster cause 8 psi added to 140hp gives you 6 more horsepower then a GST/GSX is just wrong.

yah thats cool,,like i said,, I respect anybody that makes there car go faster, espcially using a turbo kit,, not throwing on an exhaust and saying your done. Plus, you could always say your eclipse is the "non-turbo" model and kick some serious ass. I've seen a neon around here (not SRT) that can defintly kick my ass in the 1/4 and probaly many others. While of course its almost always cheaper to mod a FI engine because of built internals and all,, I'll respect even hondas if they are clean and run a decent time. Plus i have heard that the 420a is a relativly good engine to mod,, its just hard to get noticed when you got the 4G63 as the "bigger brother".

Only complaint is some of the justifications i hear for not to own a turbo car in the first place which appear on the first page. My insurance was cheaper on my turbo then it was on my nonturbo of the same year. Not quite sure why to tell you the truth but I really don't believe its a very big differnce in any state. these cars are older anyway so there not worth as much anymore and many insurance companies seem to really know what designation has a turbo and dont give a sh1t (personal experince, may not be true for u,,srry ahead of time) . AND yes the nonturbo is cheaper but many times a good turbo car can be found for almost as cheap as its non turbo counterpart. My 95 TSI (yes i know talons retail for less usually) i got for $4600 w/ 76,000 on the clock. most non turboes were very close to that and were in worse condition.


Don't mean to sound like a prick, hell, i wish i was AWD but doesn't mean I won't mod and i'm sure just because you have a 420a doesn't mean you shouldn't mod either. So go for it,, i'd like to see more 420a's at the track laying down good times.
 
ya i would have gotten a turbo if i wasnt so impatient. i didnt really research the differences, and the NT i found was in such good condition and my dad liked it... i didnt think i would get so lucky again. and i know the 4G63 is the big brother, but all to often the"big Brother" ridicules the little brother because hes not as strong. if i could do it again i would get a turbo, but since i already got an NT, im just gonna stick with it, i dont want to sell it. but ya the fact that its a nonturbo isnt detueoring me from modding, still gonna make a galant attempt. good luck to you
