I have a 6 bolt 2.1 with 9:1 Wisecos, H beam rods, BC 272/272 cams and i'm putting ARP head studs on with a new cometic HG. I have Balancer shafts removed, AC removed, Power Steering removed, and Cruise control removed. Also have a full 3" exhaust with a megan high flow cat.

Basically I want the motor to be reliable enough to make up to 10 passes at a track a night and still drive me home and to the city 100 miles both ways fine. :D Also wanna be in the 12's... nothing crazy.. a 12.99 would be exactly where I want to be.

Anywho I just don't know anything about tuning or setting up a turbo setup...

As of right now I have a 20psi boost gauge... not planning to run more than that on this build (unless I need to), and a turbo timer.

I have a freshly rebuilt 14b and i've only been running it at 12psi until I blew the HG which is why i'm just gonna put a new setup on this car. I considered running the 14b to a high 12 but I figure it will be 10 times easier and more reliable with a better setup so here it goes.

I have a walbro 255, stock 450cc inj., car is a 90 GSX 5 speed, and Turbo XS MBC.

Basically what should I do... now my max I wanna get at the track is to be in 12 country nothing more... i'm thinking a 16g as they're really cheap and i've been told will be able to get me there the cheapest overall. I've been reading up on injectors and I guess a 16g maxes out at around 650cc... this is where I know nothing about turbo applications...

Where do I go from here... I know i'm going to need some kind of tuning stuff too like a SAFC or DSM link... can I use DSM link without an EPROM? Should I get an EPROM or does it not matter at all?
 
You put a lot of money into that motor for just 12's.

16g can get you there no problems whatsoever.

I didn't put the money into it... I did most the work but I got the car in a trade for my old street bike.

This is not really a life long goal just until I can afford to go big I guess LOL.

This is your typical budget build but I wanna see 12's and be able to take this car all over the place... i'm making sure all maint. is properly done before I really rip on the car.

I'm not so confused about what turbo to use as the 16G sounds to be what I need I just know nothing about the best supporting mods to keep me from breaking things mainly my motor LOL.

So basically where do I go from here.
 
I DD'ed my car on a maft, 16g, 680s, and a walbro and went 12s.. My car was pretty damn good for how much I drove it

You used a 1g MAS or 2g? I am planning to go with a 2g MAS because my friend is giving me one for free... I had a 3" GM MAF and was thinking of going with a speed density setup but changed my mind because i'd like to keep it as basic as possible because I don't have enough experience with modding turbo cars let alone DSMs.
 
Bump, just looking for a really solid bare bones setup to get me a fun street car until I can afford to go for broke. (This DSM is NOT my DD I just don't feel like beating the car up until I can afford to [one more year of college]) LOL.

Considering getting an EPROM and having a chip made by KeyDiver... it seems this is a sure fire way to get where I want and do it right... anyone have experience with this route and am I still going to need something else besides proper injectors if I go this route?
 
Evo 3 16g, will likely be a turbo that will last you a while if you treat it nice, good power and more than most people need. good up to around 400 hp with e85 and happy engine stuff. I highly suggest getting DSM/ECM link, I run v3 and its awesome. You can get the lite version for around $345. Nothing compares to that in under 1000 bucks price range since it has data logging built in. I wish lite was around when I bought in LOL. And that will also allow you to buy pretty large injectors also for the e85 rush LOL.

BTW ecmlink makes stuff for non eprom ecu's to work with it properly. Not the cheapest route at about 150 bucks for the upgrade. Or they usually have a ecu sitting around that you may be able to buy that's had caps and whatnot replaced.
 
Seems like a good setup, you ever go to Atco? Since you're from Jersey once I tune my shit we could probably meet up and see where your car stands and all. You shouldn't have a problem running 12s, get a 16G, something to tune with (DSMlink if you really wanna go all out) and bigger injectors. A good tune and you're good to roll.

Cool, thanks for the advice... is it necessary to run a meth setup when running e85? ( I don't even know if you can get E85 anywhere around me) I was considering doing a meth setup somewhere down the road... not anytime soon but it'd be pretty cool. I think I may get an EPROM... there was one I was gonna buy and the guy disappeared so i'm still trying to see if he has it... was a REALLY good deal.

I've been to Atco a ton of times, I live like 20 minutes from it. This car has never been to it but likely will when it's all done and I think it will be reliable enough to make a couple passes. I don't really do 1/4 i'm an autocross/road course guy... I only really said I wanna pop into 12's because then it basically means I have a quick street car LOL... but yeah, i'm down for meeting up sometime this summer man. If you ever see a black 99 3000GT rolling around that's probably me.
 
Everyone I chill with always makes it down to the autocross events at Atco, I rarely ever go, not my thing, but I may try it out a bit more this year.

That is exactly what I have right now LOL... i'm running a 14b with an MBC and a full 3" with a 3" high flow cat... I really don't see myself getting 12's with that...

I pulled a 13.3 with that. on 3 different tread tires.
i know 12.9 is almost half a second away from what I ran, but I don't see it being that hard with that motor he has in there.
 
Well, I don't think i've mentioned it but i'm a 3000GT/Stealth guy at heart... I picked this DSM up more so as a DD/project so I didn't have to put so many miles on my 3000GT. Basically I don't know DSMs very well but I know a few people with them and from what i've seen they need a larger turbo and BPU mods to be quick. I keep saying 12.9 because I want to baby this car for a while... I don't really race much and I don't really need to but I wouldn't mind having something I know can hang in the 12's.
