Had to pull the head off today for some reason timing jumped and valves got bent. Now I'm debating alot on what to do, either have a bad ass turbo(fp green) with stock top end. Or a bad ass head(fully rebuilt with 272 cams)and a 14b or 16g. I'll have about $2000 to play with but I need some help on what to do. Thanks alot

What did the piston tops look like? you might want to think about engine damage before you just put a new head or turbo on it.

look very closely at the pistons with nicks on them, make sure that there isnt cracks around them. Check your oil for any metal shavings/pieces just to be on the safe side. If you decide not to rebuild, remeber those niks are going to be the weakspots of the pistons.

not sure about Crower cams, but Brian Crower cams you're going to need adj. cam gears... You should have them anyway, with anything that's a stroker/destroker.

I wont have the stroker for a while yet, only thing I have so far is the block to do it with. but from what I read I dont excactly "need" then unless Im fine tuning. but i will most likely get them any ways

If you're buying Brian Crower cams, then you might get lucky (like some) and get a set that has good initial cam timing... most people aren't that lucky and have had to use cam gears in order to get any decent lower rpm power.

Just get them, install them, have fun with them, then decide.... it's easier to learn if you jump in head first... and you shouldn't have any major problems with it running a little off. I'm just telling you what you'r almost garanteed to encounter.

I'd put on a junkyard head and try and get an engine to run for more than 4K. Not trying to be a smart A, it happened twice to me, and thankfully I kept my built head off.

Also, you can have valves break off and pass through the head and ruin a nice turbo. Also happened to me.

DSMs are only fast when they are running : D

If I have to pick one of those, assuming you had all teh valve gear figured out, I'd get the head. A 16g is more than enough for a majority of people.

SS valves are not necessary. Stock valves will do pretty much whatever you want.

I would just rebuild the head with stock valves. If you have an air compressor, I bought some sanding and polishing tools from standard abrasives on ebay. The standard abrasives are good for sanding the intake so fuel and air mix and polishing the exhaust side to keep the carbon off. If you bought some porting stones then you could port match too. You dont want to port like crazy, because the you would need a flow bench and it could lead to lag for you turbo, depending on your turbo size. a port match and sanding and polishing would be good a stock or big turbo.

Yea, unported 1g heads have ran 9s before. If anything I would leave porting the head to the proffesionals. Porting the head involves a lot of eliminating dead spots etc. If you just port it out like a big circle it doesnt do much for you as if you were to port it a little in just certain area's to help the air create a more direct pathway.

I spoke to brian crower and most reasons why people need cam gears is because they machine the head or block which makes the distance between the head and block closer so you have to adjust it to open at different times so you get the right clearance and correct times in which the valves open up. I have not tried it yet but some people agree and disagree with it. Up to you to decide.

wow I didnt know that. I ported my head, but never finished, I may have went too far, good thing I have 4 heads. I need to send Busher racing an email on how far to go. and what it should look like because im not sure at all. Ive already took off a of the divider for the exhaust.
