basically i have 2500dollars to spend on parts for my new gst. i dont want any suspension stuff yet basically i want to spend it on the motor. Ive been around the dsm world for awhile but i want to know your guys' opinion to get the most for my money.. i know the usual intake, dp, exaust, but which turbo do you guys recommend for my application and which manual boost controllers are the easiest to use (ive used some that are very hard to use)... just anything that would help would be awesome

Honestly? Follow the tuners guide here at dsmtuners.com for stage 1. Look at my mod list. I haven't spent $2,200 yet... (I'm having good luck with good priced used parts)

my overall expectations would be to have a low 13sec high 12sec car. I know that it may not be achieveable with only 2500bucks but i need to get a good start, i dont wnat to have to buy things twice if you know what i mean.. i wanna get everything now big enough or that flows enough so later on i dont have to upgrade it again. Ive been looking at the tuning guide but its kinda untrue, it gives the idea of hey if i put all these parts on i get 300hp or 400hp and its not like that at all.. so i just need a good baseline of parts. I know common things like i dont want to get hardened intercooler pipes if im gonna go with a front mount in the future but what size and type of fuel pump/injectors will i need and what turbo is the most reasonably priced and will get me to that 350+hp goal

2500 bucks probably wont get your GST into the 13's let alone the 12's without some attention to the suspention and some other tricks to get some traction, so you're right. Even though you seem turned off by the tuning guide, it is a good path to follow if you want to upgrade in a fairly linear path, and yeah if you put those parts on your car, for the most part, you will be making more power maybe not the 300-400 as designated but every application is different. For the range of power you're looking to make there are options as to how you want to do it, take a look at some of the few hundred posts on turbo selection to get an idea of what might work best for you... EvoIII 16g, 20g, 50 trim?

so lets say i go with a big16g how much boost would i be able to run on the stock injectors.. i know i need a larger fuel pump but what would be a safe estimate to run, also what suspension mods do you think would help me to get to my goal?

im also considering a Killer t28 because its a lot easier to bolt up.. would a turbo like that support the kind of horsepower that im looking for? and how much boost without injectors

The Big28, t28 killer, or whatever it may be call in this case probably would be stretched to it's limits to reach your goal. I used to have an FP Big28, nice turbo, easy to install, and a alot of pull over the stock t25 but probably not enough for you in this case, so since you said you dont want to be buying things twice, there ya go. The big 16g will get you closer, or at least to your goal of 350hp easier, but take a look at the EvoIII 16g as it's slightly larger and can support more power. With either one you'd want to keep your boost at a reasonable level with the stock injectors, I'd say no more than 15 psi but even that could be a stretch, some people might tell you differently. One of the best ways go get a bit of traction (noticed I said a bit) is to get some adjustable shocks so that you can set the rears stiff and try and reduce weight transfer to the rear of the car under acceleration, just dropping it a bit may help as well. For any FWD an LSD is a must in my opinion, which can run you anywhere from $200-$1000 depending on how hardcore you want to go... :thumb:

the bigt28 can run 12s with no problem, as long as the rest of the car is up to it. get intake, fresh plugs and wires, mbc/guage/mount, o2 eliminator turboback, logger, safc, injectors, fuel pump, afpr, rewire the pump, hard upper pipe and a bov that doesnt suck.. that will be around your limit.. then do the turbo. notice i basicly just laid out the same path as every tuning guide out there has laid out, its not untrue at all. it doesnt say all you have to do is buy these parts and you will make x amount of power.. it assumes you do all the tuning and little stuff that goes along with it.

or give it to me :D

that way i can take notes on all the stuff i buy, and submit to you a detailed report after the loot is gone about how fast i am, so you will know exactly what to expect :D

its because all the people gasping at how leet your car looks with them lowers the air pressure around you, leading to less wind resistance, which of course adds 2 seconds to your et. at least thats what my friend with a quad turbo 4000 horsepower 2001 supra told me. i hang with him up to about 160, but after that he starts pulling away... oo.. there should be a smiley that opens his mouth and a log of shit slides out southpark style, that would be awesome :D

1. Eprom ECU (OBD-II of course)
2. Datalogger and software
3. SAFC

So you can monitor the ECU and see what stock timing curves look like, and what stock perameters are.

Then after awhile of seeing how everything is:

1. Exhaust- Muffler, Cat-back, Testpipe (or Hiflow Cat), Down pipe...2 1/2" minimum
2. Upper intercooler pipe with (at least a 1G BOV) aftermarket BOV.
3. Some sort of conical open element air filter.
4. MBC- Hallman, Extremepsi, Joe P, whatever floats your boat.
5. 15psi and monitor for awhile....try to get ECU perameters as close to stock as possible., by tuning with SAFC.
6. FMIC with piping., and get perameters as close to stock or better, via SAFC.
7. Big28, Big16G, 20g, T3/T4...whatever you feel comfortable spending money on.
8. CLUTCH. unless you already have this done...disregard....you'll need it by this point in your upgrades...believe me.
9. Dyno tuning.

Thats what I would do.

Plug your $2500 into getting stuff done...and see where you come out.

Thats MHO.

Good luck and have fun!!! :thumb:

there is only one T28 equipped car on the 1/4 mile list that ran better than a 13.1 ! OMG

1997 GSX, with a grip of mods. Kinda sad.....I too, cannot get out of the 13 second range :shhh:

I don't know anymore...I never really thought to look and see how many Big28s had made it to the 12's. I am truely disappointed. :thumbdown

Come on Big28 peoples....we gotta show others that these turbo's can lay the smack down too

Anyone else have proof of better than 13.2 with a T28 turbo? I have a 13.21 @ 103 slip.
Someone better that so I don't feel bad!!!

Sorry about the hijack!!

Show me a FWD running 12's on the Big28.

Yea, no kidding...12 sec on the b28 is a stretch. It would take a hell of a driver and a car that weighed nothing to get 12s out of it. Getting 12s out of an e16g is still kinda a stretch...possible, but its pushing it to its limits.

Another thing to consider about your car would be an electronic boost controller, or a dual-stage MBC. Reason being, if you crank the boost and put down alot of power, your gonna have massive traction problems. You can set the EBC to a low boost setting for 1st or 1st and 2nd gear...or just switch the MBC yourself after a launch. I don't have experience with FWD, but my buddy as a GST and he was having bad problems at the track. Dual stage helped him out alot.

wow it looks like you guys arent kidding, i could have sworn i saw a few 12 sec times for it when i was investigating which turbo to get but after looking around now there really arent very many at all that are actually documented.. hopefully your poll brings in some good news for us gsxtacy :) i havent been to the track with my car but i am basicly still stock so my numbers wouldnt mean much, the only reason i even got mine so early is because my t25 died out of nowhere

gsxtacy- you ran a 13.2 according to your car profile on pump gas and the stock intercooler.. it seems that with race gas and an fmic a 12 would be possible?

I'm sure he could probably catch high 12s with the Big28 in his AWD GSX, but FWD is a completely different story. Dont get me wrong it's a very capable small turbo, I truely enjoyed my Big28 as long as I had it, but I dont think it's cut out for the times this guy wants to run.

FP claims their Big T28 pulled 11's with a full weight GSX. Sounds like proof to me. Oh and the B16G is equal unlike stated above.

Follow the tuning guide and you'll be good. Defidently get all the supporting mods out of the way before you get the turbo, that way you get the full potential of the turbo upgrade when you do one.

Check out this thread for some supporting mods:

alright well it sounds like the big28 is kinda out of the picture then.. what would be my next best option in terms of ease of installation and fast spool up time.. and its looking to me that 12's fwd is gonna be very difficult without extensive motor/suspension work.. so what would just be a good solid turbo. What would it take to mount up a big16g or similar turbo? do i need a kit or do they come with kits
