Hey guys, so here's the problem...

I just installed an upper intercooler hard pipe kit for my stock SMIC. After I got it in, I fired up the car. As usual, the RPMs started a little high, but then the idle settles itself out at about 1k RPMs. As it was making its way down to 1k RPMs, it kept going down and started hesitating, and then died. I was able to keep the car running the next time by occasionally pressing on the throttle. I hopped out of the car to check for boost leaks (I figured this could be the only issue). I heard some hissing where the last pipe connects to the SMIC.

I have had a long day and I'm heading to bed. Therefore, I ask this question: Is my problem just a boost leak? Or does this sound like something different? (Once I have some free time tomorrow, I'll fix the boost leak. I assume my question will be answered then, but I just wanted to hear your guys' inputs now).

Thanks!

If you had a significant enough boost/vacuum leak, your idle would go crazy and you'd likely end up in idle surge.
Check to make sure you didn't accidentally unplug something, like your ISC.

I don't believe I unplugged anything, but I'll definitely double check tomorrow! It's just strange, because the last time I had a boost leak, my idle just went up to like 2k. It never died like this.

Well, the idle settled itself out. But now, my pulls don't feel as hard as they used to. My car starts to pull, but then it like hits a wall and starts to slow down, while under boost.

Any ideas? You guys rock!

I had a big boost leak at lower ic pipe/hose, and the car would barely run, idled low and died. Tightened the clamp after pushing the hose back on, and voila, car runs again. Yes a boost leak can affect performance like hitting a wall. Remember your MAF has already accounted for the air that leaks so it causes the af to be rich. In addition no (reasonable) boost pressures can be achieved (and sustained).

You have a boost leak, i doubt a test is needed if it was fine before just recheck your piping and redo it again making sure all clamps are tight. At the time of a pull when you feel that wall it is then confirming the boost leak since there is no vaccuum at WOT. Find the leak and call it a day.

Thanks guys.

Well, I think I'm just going to go back to my stock "piping". The clamps are tight but I can still hear the leak. For some reason, the new pipe was way bigger than the inlet for the SMIC, so the pipes went inside of each other. I'm guessing that's the cause of my leak.

Yeah that would cause a leak if its not sealed properly. Save up and get front mount a kit from ebay. I ran one for a long time on my talon and no problems with it. It might have been cx racing can't remember.
