What speed sensor for JDM Auto AWD Transmission

I currently have a newly acquired 1997 eagle talon which appears to be using a JDM transmission. The speedometer doesn't work whatsoever with this car and I have a feeling it is the speed sensor. I am just wondering what the part number(s) would be for the sensor and or the gear required to make this thing operate properly. I have the head off of the car currently so it is the easiest time for me to be able to access the sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

anyone on this? Got the speed sensor out of the car today and tested it with a drill and it definitely shows speed so the sensor works, but i need to know which gear i need. How long should it be. Also, can i take the gear off the sensor and gently (i know i cant drop anything into the tranny) set it in and see if it is making contact or spinning/not spinning.

fwd and awd have different size gears. dont know which is which. but if the tranny uses the big gear and it has the small gear installed its not gonna spin

The gear that i have seems just big enough to go through the hole into the transmission. Anyone know if the awd gear is the bigger gear, or possibly the smaller gear? Just trying to figure this out so i can get the car back together. Definitely dont want to try and swap gears once the head is back on. It is pretty tight in there.

Took the gear out of the sensor today and dropped it in carefully by hand to see if it would catch anywhere where there should be another drive gear, didn't feel anything unless i canted the gear sideways somewhat then it would catch. Im guessing the gear is too small of diameter and is not meeting with the other gear. Anyone know what the awd gear diameter should be? Also if anyone has the difference in diameter between the awd and fwd speed sensor gears. Wanting to determine what i have in there now and what i need to get.

I can tell you the speed sensor gear part number for that transmission is MD755875. It is a 27 tooth gear where most, if not all, of the 2G gears are 28 or 29 teeth. One of them I do not have that information on, unfortunately, and the part number is not the same. It does not appear that this gear is available in the states.

EDIT: The one I did not have the information on is a 28 tooth gear.

As far as I can tell, your transmission is relatively unique, only found in four months of the '97 RVR production run.

My best advice would be to contact Tim or lure him in here to see if he can help or offer any ideas.

How certain are you that that gear is the one to work with this transmission? I found a site through google that i can get the part but if I am not 100% certain that it will work i dont want to do it. Any downsides to not using a speed sensor besides not seeing how fast im going?

Oh, pretty certain.

Using Mitsubishi ASA (Japan version), located W4A33-1-FM61 transmission for the N23WG model RVR, classification SRHF which is a 2.0L Hyper Sports-Gear R (4WD/DOHC/TURBO), 4A/T. The "Torque Converter & Automatic Transaxle Sub Assy" (the W4A33... transmission) is part number MD975808 and for that specific transmission, the speedo gear is MD755875.

damn, and there are no other gears that would work i take it. If it was your transmission would you feel confident enough to order the gear for that tranny? No other issues with the transmission, drove fine when the car was driving.

The gear will not catch anything by simply putting it into the hole. It has to be held at a certain height and only grabs by a few millimeters. Install it and see if it works. Speaking from personal experience, the speed sensor is important for the ECU's calculations. Without one I was lucky to get over 2-3psi before hitting a wall. Plugged it back in an vuala! Boosted fine ever since.

Ive had the speedsensor installed, no speedometer whatsoever. If i position the gear somewhat canted it hits a wall, my guess would be the drive gear. The car was boosting fine with no working speed sensor. Just annoying not having the speed show directly in front of your face.

Correct. That is the only gear and transmission provided for that model and classification and -- again, as far as I can tell -- the only model that transmission appears under, period.

Do I trust the part number? Yeah, I do. Some of the sites listing it, on the other hand, not so much.

So you dont feel that the sites listing that gear are actually selling that part? Just trying to feel ya out for an answer on what my next step should be. And would YOU think there would be any drawbacks to not using a speed sensor?

I mean some of the sites look sketchy and I don't usually trust websites that are in a language I can't read.

As for whether it would cause problems, I wouldn't think so. I don't have my diagrams to look at, though. 28 tooth gear is 23.75mm
29 tooth is 25.75mm

I have seen many pics of the RVR trans. I want to put one in my evo 1. It uses a cable drive. the speed sensor is mounted n speedo like evo 1-3 and 1992-1996 mirages.

evo 4-8/9 gear is 30 tooth and 26.75. this sensor is shorter in length but will fit the dsm trans.

you need to get your hands on the rvr gear for your trans. from there I could help you modify to make a drop in sensor that will work, it looks like the gear and shaft from cable drive can be shortened to work in the evo 4/9 sensor body.

I have the sensor it drops right in to the same hole like our usdm transmissions. Just the gear I have on the sensor definitely is not making contact. No uneven wear or anything either. Just no contact. I'm going to try and source one of those gears our of japan somehow. I have some buddies that are overseas there right now.

your sensor is likely original from the car not the trans.

Ya it is definitely a speed sensor from the original trans. I thought there was no way of converting the cable drive sensor to work with our cars.

you wouldnt be using the cable drive sensor. you will only be using the 27 tooth gear and possibly the shaft.
