What kind of knock is this?

Ok , I have a couple different sounds my engin is making, I am trying to figure out what they are, and I am pretty sure I have nailed it , but let me see what someone with some dsm experiance has to say

When I first start the car up in the morning and takeoff for the first 2-5 minuets it will make a loud squeling type noise, then it goes away. and its only when the turbo spools. So would this be an exhaust leak more the likly? It goes away when the metal expands or somthing?

And I am also getting a loud tick noise at idle and at 3500- rpm's , it ticks faster with the higher rpm range. Doesnt sound like lifters.. Maybe a stuck valve? Or maybe it is the lifters? Any ideas?

well, lets start with the easiest.... the 2G has the common "LIFTER" tick.... i hate it. They sell revised ones and they say the 3G will fix it. The tick noise is because the oil sets down into the oil pan and when you first start the car or at idle, the oil is not flowing fast enough to fully saturate the lifters..... they tick ( if I'm wrong please correct me..... ) If you want to lower/get rid of the noise, they say Lucas Oil Stablizer works. I've tried it and I did see it go away but I'm the type of person that just can't add something for it to go away, I'm doing an engine rebuilt this winter so I will take care of that

Ok, now that other noise. Lol... most people here will just tell you to warm your car up longer and not boost it when you first start it in the morning. The car is cold and nothing runs like it should. Start it up, let it idle for a while before you go off driving, and when you do go driving, don't start grabbing gears... drive it for a little then start letting hell loose. O yeah, that "squeling type noise", the way you describe it just sounds like an accessory belt or something.

Actually, it's your turbo not being lubricated.

There's a reason the owner's manual says to let the car warm up for five minutes before boosting it; there's no hot oil keeping the turbo shaft nice and slick. You're killing your turbo by boosting it before it's warmed up. It's not a ball bearing system.
Also, you'll likely shorten the lifespan of your piston rings by not giving them time to fully seat before getting on the car hard. I've had one friend who's blown three engines (or at least shot them to sh*t) by going out, starting the car, and tearing ass down the street without giving it any time at all to warm... and those are non-turbo engines.

Love your car. Don't abuse it.

Check your alternator belt. And all other belts. When I first got my car is was squelling for the first 2-5 mins too. I found out it was my belts squelling. I tighten them and haven't heard a squeak yet.

Sounds like the common 2g lifter tick.

The squealing is a loose or worn out belt. The ticking is the lifters.

^^^ I agree. These same things happen to my car on cold start-ups. I can't wait to replace my lifters, but my car is under a foot of snow right now, so it has to wait. As for the squeeling sound, to absolutely check if it's a belt, try turning your steering wheel and see if that changes the sound. I found on mine that as the power steering pump is forced to work, the sound pitch changes, indicating it's a belt. And yes, always warm up your car before you drive in winter. I killed a turbo not doing this.

Which is also why I'm not driving my car this winter.

Check the timing belt, if that breaks while your driving, say bye bye to your engine

If it was squealing all the time on startup, it would be a belt. He said that it's only squealing when the turbo spools... so logic says? Refer to my prior post. :b

not true actually...yes it makes sense that it would squeek all the time if it was a belt but i had the same thing happen. i would start the car and let it warm up for about 5 mins. i didnt hear a thing. as soon as i hit the gas just a little the thing was screaming like a banchy! it turned out that i tightened the belts and the problem was solved
