2G What is this sensor?

Recently my timing belt broke. I removed the head and of course 3 valves were bent. I got a new head and Im ready to replace everything but I noticed this sensor thats broken and I hav no clue what it does or what it is. Does anyone know what its for and can it be replaced?

thats the cam sensor. if there is a trigger plate on your cam sprocket?

i wouldnt get one from autozone or w.e it is a critical senser and i would reccomend using an oem one

I thought crank since he has a 97 it should have the cam sensor on the other side of the head unless someone has swapped in a different motor and wiring harness into the vehicle.

I had that same thought at first too but on the crank senors the pick ups point in the same direction as the harness if you know what i mean, where as on the cam they point up

For the price of a new sensor you could get a 1g CAS and wire that up to your harness.

Well when I went to put the new head on some how I believe I broke this other sensor and I have no idea where it goes? can someone tell me what it is and where does it go...PLEASE???? thanks

that last one looks like the knock sensor. 99% sure.

although I don't reconize the little metal tab it is connected to, and it should have a little threaded "stud" in the middle of the black goo.

It is 100% the knock sensor. EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - OEM Knock Sensor : Mitsubishi Eclipse 95-99 It goes in the center of the back of the block. Since you broke it off the should be an 18 or 19mm ( I believe thats the size )bolt just chillin in the back.

Replace it! If it begins to read wrong it can throw your fuel and timing trim way off. It creates a voltage signal based on abnormal vibrations through the block. Rather be safe than sorry. It simply goes in the back of the engine block. Just bolts right onto the block

+1 another very critical sensor make sure you buy oem on this one as well.

Well I have just about everything ready to go back together but when I turned the crank to make sure everything was in time, that plate that covers the balance shaft belt hits up against the tensioner. My dad bent it out a little and it stopped it but Im afraid it will do it again. Is there supposed to be a spacer or anything between it? Here is a picture of what Im talking about. I swear it seems like I take one step forward and two steps back.

Try and rotate the inside adjuster of the balance shaft belt tensioner clockwise a little. That should get it far enough away where it wont interfere with the CPS plate.

I think you adjusted the BS belt tensioner the wrong way (turn in clockwise instead). Also, double check that the trigger plate isn't backwards.

I almost put mine on backwards when i was replacing some parts in there as well. If it is on backwards it will rub, and the timing marks on it will be a few teeth off!

Ok I went to crank the car up just to see if it would start after doing the timing belt and water pump install. It would crank over but would not start, I figure this is because I dont have the connector on the cam sensor. Ive looked all over my engine bay but I just cant figure out where the connector is for it. Can anyone point me into the right direction? thanks for all the help.

I checked again and I still cant figure this out, and also I checked and there is no spark.

yes that is definitly the knock sensor, was your car rewired as a 1g?

I don't think so but I'm not sure. I know I'm definitely not getting any fire to the coil packs. I'm getting so frustrated, I spent my whole day off trying to get the car started. This is a different head but everything on this one is the same as the previous one.

why does your 97 have a cranksensor

It was like that when I bought it. It ran fine before the timing belt broke, but I replaced the head, new knock sensor and cam sensor as well.

Ok I compared my car to my friends 98 and his didn't have the sensor that I circled in the previous pictures. We did a little trouble shooting and unplugged the sensor that is next to the one that I circled but we unplugged it on my friends car to see if it would start without it and it didn't. So I'm thinking that this is the problem with mine. The sensor in question is right next to the one that I have circled in that last picture I posted. Does anyone know where this leads to and I'm thinking its the crank sensor. It was fine @ first before the timing broke. Thanks
