I need to find out what short shifter on the market is best for my car. I bought a really cheap short shifter...not knowing that it was a knock off -__- smh. It has a short throw between gears but there is a lot of play in the shifter itself.

It really pisses me off when im driving because all I hear is things clanking under my shiftboot. I reopened everything and made sure everything was tight and snug..but no, still has play. I also have another problem, when i shift into 1st, 2nd, 5th & reverse...the shifter goes right back into the middle of the boot(still in gear). I can't figure out what the problem may be, i dont know if it's suppose to be like that or not.

Also, the short shifters you guys suggest, i need a shift knob that will fit on that thread pitch aswell. Looking for a white ball shift knob.

What I want to know is:
-What is the best short shifter to buy?
-White ball shift knob to go with it...
-What is up with the crazy play in my gears?

Any help or advice will be most appreciated!
Thanks,
Kevin.

I run the B&M shifter on my car, however it has been discontinued. I would keep the stock shifter over a cheap one. You may also want to take a look at the little bushings in the stock shifter assembly. Once they wear out you will notice a lot of extra play. I am also looking into getting a white ball shift knob, but there are not to many options for our threads. I will be buying a classic Hurst cue ball in 3/8-16 thread, drilling out the threads and retapping it for our threads, 10M 1.25.

I was wondering wear you could find those bushings online to replace them and im also thinking about doing the samething for the shift knob

Im researching up on the DogBox but what does it mean exactly..? I have to send in my "core"?
Someone please help

Try installing a symborski shift kit, that might help.

I'm interested in what everyone's opinion is on a short throw shifter as well. I think the stock 2G shift throw is retarded long.

I've heard good things about the B&M.

There is like only play with the stick shift, its in gear but the shifter likes to slide back to the middle of the boot. Sometimes i forget what gear im in. I was going to get B&M but they say that it has been discontinued.

but i will look into this symborski shift kit, thanks

Also, if you still have the stock rubber bushings in the cables where they connect to the transmission they are most likely worn. You can replace them with brass bushings, aluminum bushings, or skateboard bearings.

I've seen videos of that being done but i dont think that would help, its just side to side play.

The B&M is an excellent shifter. Even the generic copies of it will work just fine. They are litterally identical to the original B&M anyway. IMO, the throw of the stock shifter is terrible.

Best bang for the buck

Which one specifically did you already try?

It was from Option Racing, i really didnt do my research on it because i was really rushing into buying one. It's kinda embarrassing on my part LOL i was looking into TWM short shifters...if not i was going to buy a B&M short shifter off of ebay

For the record, the first picture below is the design that you want to stay away from. The second picture is the good design.

sadly..i bought the first one :ohdamn:

Pitch it. I've thrown away two of them now just because I'm not willing to see someone use it just so I can make a buck.

I had one break in half while I was driving down the road on my old GS about 10 years ago. Sad thing is the quality looks even worse now than it did back then.

That one looks just like the Megan short shifter

Yeah, pretty much every foreign company started copying the B&M design about 6 years ago. That's probably why B&M discontinued theirs.

Thanks, I have been looking for those bushings for a long time.
@DWR-DSM

Both the Megan and b&m have the stock thread pitch. I have both but I prefer the b&m just because of the name.

This might sound like a stupid question but what is the stock thread pitch? :|

I am going to throw away that POS short shifter i have now and get that D5 Concept short shifter. The one i have now is causing me to have a lot of problems; missing gears, a lot of play, shifting into wrong gears, etc.

i know this thread seems to be about short throw shifters... but does anyone know of a good short shifter so the stick itself is just shorter? i like the stock throw on my 2g.. just want a smaller stick. any help would be appreciated.

The only thing i can think of is self-fabrication. But, thats kinda ricer, no offense bro..i'm just trying to help you out from one dsmer to another.:thumb:

I've never seen an aftermarket shifter modeled after the factory throw - let alone one that's just shorter.

The easiest and cheapest way to get what you want would be to cut down and reweld a factory shifter.

Those energy suspension bushings are great, I bought a set years ago, and I always recomend them. The stock thread pitch on the oem shifter is 10M x 1.25. The "real" B&M had the same thread pitch, some of the "fake" B&M look-a-likes have a different thread pitch, so be aware of that before you buy your shift knob.
