I have a 1991 eclipse gsx, and i am looking to hard pipe my fmi and install a new air intake. Something along the lines of a cold air or something. But the guy at the shop i get my work done at said that 1g eclipses have a square MAF and he said that it would make putting in a aftermarket intake difficult. He said something about converting to a 2g MAF because it is round. Does that sound right. If you guys have any tips or info that would help that would be great.

Thanks:D

I think he got it mixed around, if you plan on going deep into mods it would be best to do a 2g maf (Square box) conversion so you could buy a different intake. But a maf conversion requires bigger injectors, some wiring and a little tuning. So basically it's not that big of a deal right now if you just want an intake. A 1g one will work the same way. (the 1g is the circle MAF)

If you're hard piping the FMIC, there should still be some clearance even with a 2g MAF which is actually bigger in size

Okay, i have 1991 eclipse gsx. I was just wondering what new hard pipe intake will fit the stock 1g MAF? Im new to the dsm community, and my first upgrades are intake and fmic. I got the intercooler, just need the intake, and im not sure what to buy.

Thanks

A lot of it depends on how far you are going with the car. The 1g maf is smaller which makes it easier to overrun so that's why a lot of people go with the 2g maf.
Here's a guide on the 2g in a 1g.

(It's under INTAKE then MAF)

But you can also just get an intake pipe for the 1g maf if you're keeping your car close to stock. Dejon sells various intake pipes for a 1g maf.
Here's a link to their site.

It depends on your future goals. If you want to keep from buying duplicate parts, you might want to consider the turbo you will be running in the future...and if you are actually going to stick with the 1g MAF. A lot of 1G guys upgrade to the 2g MAF as it supports more power. Here is a start on intakes: DSM Intake Pipes - DSMtuners.com

Ok I see you have a 16g...are you sticking with the stock MAF?

If you have a 16G and plan to stay with it there's no need for you to upgrade your MAF. That being said, any money spent on an intake pipe would be money better spent elsewhere for you. You won't see the kind of gains with an intake pipe upgrade that you would with, say, an upper intercooler pipe upgrade. The stock intake pipe will suit you just fine. Use that money for something else. :)

Yeah you'd get a couple hp but don't expect a huge amount, mainly you should get a better increase of airflow, let's everything breathe better. Usually the intake is the first mod because it's a base supporting mod for everything else that comes after. The hard pipe will definitely get the job done better than the stock rubber snorkel, and as of right now the 1g MAF is plenty enough.

Okay, i am looking to hard pipe the intake on my 1991 gsx. What i am wondering is if the CIP-1gM-2.7 intake pipe will work with my car and my turbo. My biggest concern is the fitment on the turbo; will this work with my 16g or not. If it wont work, i will keep looking, but if it does i will probably buy it. What do you guys think. DEJON | Powerhouse, its the second one down.

Thanks

Okay. I have a fmic that I am also going to pipe. When I pipe the fmic I am going to buy a new bov. I see on my current stock bov that the recirculation pipe goes into the intake. When I buy a new bov, will it have a recirculation pipe like the stock bov that will go to the intake. Or will the bov not have one, which would make the pipe sticking off the intake useless.

It depends on the type of BOV you buy. Some have a recirculation fitting (Greddy RS), some can be adapted to be recirculated (SSQV), but some just will not work (most Ebay, TurboXS, Tial, etc). I would keep the stock 1g BOV unless something is wrong with it. They can hold boost great as is, and even better if you crush them a bit (research before attempting).

IMO I would just keep the 1g bov. Works great, holds boost like it should, should be plenty for awhile.

It all depends on your boost level. Mine started leaking at 25psi. My STi has a very similar bov on it and even when crushed it leaked at 22psi. Nothing but TiAL for me.

Go ahead and get your intake and recirc your 1G BOV. While you are enjoying that, read up on aftermarket BOVs and when you are ready, purchase your BOV and IC piping at the same time with the appropriate flange. I like the Greddy and HKS BOVs.
