I bought the awd laser and finally looked at the clutch and the spring was broke. What could have caused this and could the tranny be f*#$

I've seen the spring pop out of a sprung hub on my friends DSM and my SHO as well, but never break like that. I'm sure that it did nothing to the tranny. If you had trouble shifting(clutch not fully engaging) or noise, that was probably it.

Well, think of it this way:
If you were them, removed the tranny and found out you needed a new clutch... would you bolt the tranny back up even though you'd have to remove it again to install the new clutch?

Resulting from that, there should be no damage to the tranny...just look over the bellhousing for cracks....If there are none, your in good shape

Well, a friction disk hub shock spring failed, possibly from... well, anything. A good nick in the spring wire during assembly could create a stress riser from which a crack could propagate. However, being a DSM, it most likely failed from someone beating the living shit out of it.
Look at the orientation of the hub finger vis the rivets in the friction material- is that whole thing shifted? I can't really tell, but it looks cockeyed.
