I'm replacing clutch in my FWD 97 tsi, what is the best fluid to run in there? Car is pushing near 300.

I'd presume syncromesh works fine specially in winter because of it being a thin lubricant. It was made primarily for transmissions requiring atf/engine oil. I'd think syncromesh would be ok if mixed with another fluid, specially if thicker. I believe it's MachV that recommends a BG fluid mix, I tried that mix on my 1ga years ago and it worked pretty well for a notchy 150k mile trans. Never ran that mix on the 2gb though.

Run the Coastal gear oil from Autozone. Its cheap, and it actually works pretty good. I've taken transmissions apart that have been running that fluid for many years, and everything looked pretty good.

I second this.

Its generally a personal preference thing. I use synchromesh, but it needs to be change more often than other oils.

If I can get my O'Reilly to stock redline I will probably switch to that as it doesn't need to be changed as often.

I have run Redline full synth fluids in the DSM for the past 10 years. It worked well. Always have to order it. The redline that was in the tranny, transfer case & rear diff were only a few hundred miles old. I tried to save it when I did the motor & tranny swap in to GSX shell. Didn't work out well. Spilled a bunch. Got bunch of debris in it.
Now trying Penzoil Syncromesh in the tranny & Royal purple in the transfer case. We'll see how it works.

Pennzoil/GM Synchromesh has always been my choice, though it is a lil thinner, ive put it in bad tranny's before and did wonders to them. My old talon had a bad 5th gear, would not work at all and 1st n 3rd would grind pretty bad going in, once i switched there was no grinds and 5th magically worked again and was good till i sold the car. I've recommended it to many others base off my personal experienced and they've all told me its good shit as well. Cheap yes, but VERY good and very effective, BUT as the others above me have stated, its all personal preference.

Syncromesh/Syncro-shift is too thin for anyone making considerably more horsepower than stock. Also, it breaks down quickly and really provides little lubrication at that point.

Redline shockproof (light or heavy) should not be in a street-driven transmission that doesn't get torn down and gone through often. It has many ingredients (paraffin is one I believe) that are designed to "build up" on the surface of parts to provide a layer of protection that doesn't get "slung" off when the gears rotate at high speeds. This works great until it builds up in your oil passages and causes more harm than good over time.

If you're really pushing your trans (400whp+) then you need to step up to something that's designed to handle the heat and not break down. A motorsport-grade lubricant like NEO Synthetics 75w90 RHD or a Torco Racing fluid is worth the extra money a opposed to the cost of replacing your trans. I've run 75w90 RHD in my race car and it's survived several long-session track days at over 400 hp. Road racing is the worst thing you can do for your trans. The long periods of time at high loads and RPMs will break down all but the best fluids. I run the 75w90 "HD" NEO fluid in my DD GSX and it shifts amazingly, is much more affordable than the RHD and is designed for longer intervals in mind.
