What does it mean when a turbo is..say....41lb/min????? what is that referring to??? i dont how a 50lb/min turbo is different then a 40lb/min turbo, well, i guess the bigger the number the bigger the turbo..but thats about all i know, can someone explain this to me?? :confused:
 
Thats is how much air a turbo can flow. Yes the bigger the number the bigger the turbo generally. Some of the fast 14B and 16G guys have seen 20G flow numbers from these small turbos, so its not be all end all size comparison.

I thought that the CFM was how much a turbo can flow, how does CFM and lb/min relate??

They are both the same just on different scales, like MPH and KPH. I know there is a way to convert one to the other and vice versa but I cant find it. If you are looking for a turbo that will support a certain amount of power then you can always call the vendor and see what they think or look around and see what others are running. Buying a turbo from only these numbers is not the way to do it.

it isn't quite that simple.

flowcfm=flowlbm*10.73*(temp+460)/(29*(pressure+14.7));

This should be the correct formula. Not completely sure though long day at work.

They are SUPPOSED to be maximum flow numbers, which means that the are a be all and end all comparison (of compressor flow capabilities, that is).

No matter how good your setup is, no matter how good you tune, there is a flow that you will not be able to exceed with a certain turbo.

You said the same thing I did but trying to make me look stupid. I wasnt talking about just compressor flow that is why I said not the be all end all, all though it is one of the ways to compare. Supposed to and actual are not the same thing so, again, you can use other ways to compare.

You said that "some of the fast 14b and 16g guys hav seen 20g flow numbers..." which is VERY misleading.

The 14b flows like 32 lb/min. The sm16g flows 36. The 20g flows, say, 45 (I am not sure on this one). This all has little to do with the speed of the people using them or what people have experienced.

You made it seem like he was talking about flow rates of a SYSTEM, when he was talking about maximum flow rates of a TURBO.
 
I have seen people say that they have seen about 42 lbs/min from a 16G with a logger. I am guessing they are converting numbers they got into lbs/min so they could be off. I will try and find the thread if I can, thats why I said they have seen 20G flow numbers from these turbos.

i would like to know what a evo III flows and what a 20g flows, anyone know? in lb/min??
