What do I need to do to beat a 98 Cavalier Z24?

so for me to run a 75 all i would need is a fuel pump from a turbo dsm? how hard is it to install, i hear its a direct bolt on but i just wanted to make sure w/ ppl I know will know. Will the ecu automatically detect to bigger fuel pump?

you just gotta remember that with turbo, the power is always there while with nitrous, its only there when theirs some juice in the bottle and the system is armed. if you dont race too much then i would say to stick with the bottle. thats what ill probably be doing anyway:dsm:

Ya I wont be racing all that much, only weekends off from work and school. So Nitrous sounds like my best option. I will be starting to mod this spring. What order would you guys suggest I mod in?? Im planning on Intake, full exhaust, cams, and nitrous. What should be first and last?

i would say that you should at least get the basics, i/h/e, out of the way first then put the nitrous in. the other mods can only help and make the gains better. you also might want to look into what i plan on doing which is doing a bottom end rebuild so that i can try out a 100 shot. try to break into the 13's non turbo. keep in mind that there are a lot more mods besides those 4 to get those kinds of numbers but it is possible. especially when you take into account that a friend of mine with a 96 eclipse is running a 14.5 on a 50 shot with his only other mods being i/h/e and cam gears, 13 doesnt seem to far fetched. we shall see tho. hit me up on aim sometime if you have any other questions:dsm:

Hey bro what you need is your basic intake, exhaust, headers, throttle body and pulleys and you should be set for the z24. my buddy has a z24 and all i have on my 98 talon is intake and exhaust and i beat him by a little bit. Goodluck man

"Does your "NOS" only shave off 4 tenths ralli?"

I have no clue what it shaves off, i don't drag race all that much, i have a g-tech meter for cornering g's and i had it hooked up when i raced that probe, it told me 15.9 @ 93mph, it says it's accurate to tenths of a second but who knows. When i logged that time i had real torn motor mounts and got a rediculous ammount of wheel hop, since then i've put poly mounts in, so i really have no idea what i'm pulling, an honest guess would be mid 15's or a little lower. which for a mildly modded car not setup for drag racing seems pretty good. A stock clutch will be fine unless you spray the N20 in first gear, which isn't a good idea since the revs climb so fast with the N20 that you'll probaby buzz the motor, i definitely don't think the stock clutch could handle any drag strip abuse using N20. But for boy-racer-ricer-beating on the street it should be ok.
I suggest you get a pocketlogger so you can check your injector pulse with the NOS on, i just got one but haven't done it with the nos yet. As for putting in a turbo, just sell the car and buy a turbo. it would cost less then doing it right, plus you'll probably have a shitload of problems if because of the non turbo motor, there are no oil squirters under the pistons and a higher compression, so with all the turbo stuff you need more fuel and all that, so if you want turbo power just save up and buy a GST/GSX and save yourself the headache.

Nah, i really want to stay non-turbo. I dont like how people think that just because it doesnt have turbo, it isnt fast. Plus I dont have the money to just buy a turbo car. I work and I am a full time student at school. So the only option I have is making it faster little by little. Plus I am at school for automotive technology, so I have full access to all machinery, and facilities to do what I want. This is my project car. And while modding my car my self I will learn so much. I doubt that I will put in the nitrous tho. Im too scared that I will screw it up. Any one out there running nitrous on their non turbo? How well is it treating you?

I melted a spark plug in the no. 4 cyl., but that was before the pump upgrade. Think of it this way, You add cams ($500.00) head work ($1000.00) and all the bolt ons you can (say $700.00), so to gain 75 hp through all those mods you spend $2200.00, the bottom end of the motor is seeing an additional 75 hp, and so is the rest of the car (i.e. fuel system, drivetrain, etc. etc.) So say you add a 75hp boost of N20, the rest of the car components see an additional 75hp. add more HP you need more fuel, add more Hp driveline parts are going to start breaking stuff, the motor doesn't know the difference between NOS power and Modded parts power. so you spend 500 on 75 hp or you spend 2200 on 75 hp, take your pick, the result is the same. Plus with N20 you maintain all the street driveability without any idle problems or anything like that. If you use the nitrous right, you will be fine.

and props to wanting to stay non turbo, i can't tell you how many people say "why don't you turbo it". There are a million reasons for me, I love the sound of a NA 4 cyl., i need the reliability of a non turbo, i don't need turbo power because i don't drag race, the list goes on and on... Plus when you beat people with a non turbo it's an even better victory.

I agree with you, NO2 for cheap power. The cons, only if you are not competent to install it or operate it in an unhealthy engine are engine failure.:barf: and you have to refill the bottle from time to time, which isn't much, but could leave you "nozzlezzz"

I disagree that all that work will get you 75hp, so that works out more for your argument. Does your g-tech show 75 more whp than otherwise when no2 is off RALLI?

If you are sure your car can handle it ie: compression and leakdown are good, fuel system is up to par, then I say why not?

Turbo cams are cheap and very affordable, I paid 30 buck for mine, and the difference was more than any of my other mods. As long as you get a good used set, it will only help. I have no doubt that I can lay waste to mildly modded z24's, it really depends on what this guy has done, maybe you should mention that if you know what he has done to his car, which I hope is a good amount since he is in a car club. N/A is fine, but there is no way it sounds better than a turbo, and you don't get the same punch for sure. It all depends on what your goals are. If you wanted to go after the stang, thenyou're going to need more than no2. To me a victory is a victory, and means nothing more. I would feel bad though if I dumped 2 grand into my car to barely beat certain cars though.

I think all you need is: Free mods via vfaq.com, Aircan hacked off (free), exaust, ported manifold (free), punched cat (free/preference of sound) and turbo cams and you will be right up there with the Z

Total cost: 30-40 + 150= $190

Why don't you race him and then decide what to do...you may not need to dump a bunch of $$$ into your car...he may be a crappy driver :thumb:

is the z24 a auto or manual... maybe you will get lucky and they will have a shitty auto tranny that loses sum% of the power to the wheels :). Just go ahead and race him and find out, i think you could beat a z24 and if not I think it would b close.... just add a cam, and the usual intake and decent exhaust to support the cam and I think you could beat him. and if not after that... just piss on his car and tell him cavilers are ghey.

Nah, his car is stick, and as far as I know he is a good driver. None of their cars are heavly modded. I believe the Z24 has only intake and exhaust. Do any of you know if there are any websites dedicated to the 1g NT??

I was the same. I have a 1996 Eclipse RS that is now turboed. Before that though I stomped Probes and Cavaliers. I don't have a time slip though but my setup was:

PaceSetter Headers
2 1/2" Exhaust
High Flow Cat
Naxos Muffler
AEM CAI
Magnecor 8.5s
NGKs
ICW GT Sport Wheels (not that great)
Khumo Ecstas Supras

These are relatively inexpensive mods with no internal work needed and they made my RS suprisingly quick and fun to drive.

peace:dsm:

Does your g-tech show 75 more whp than otherwise when no2 is off RALLI?

I don't know, you have to enter the weight for the car to get the HP figures, and i don't know what the weight of mine is, so much stuff has been changed it's way off the curb weight of the car, so i've never used the HP function. What did you do you timing with your turbo cams? did you just use the stock cam gears and timing you'd use with the NA cams?

I have a 2.2 liter 5 speed cavalier at the moment, and im lookin at gettin a DSM. But anyways, i raced this girl from school who has a 97 gs auto with intake and exhaust. I have an intake, exhaust, and 17s. I had 2 other people in my car and she had a friend with her. We went from a stop up to about 70 and i KILLED her. I had to have won by at least 5-6 car lengths it was real sad. Then we went from a 40 mph roll to about 80 and i won by about 2 car lengths (my 3rd gear sux).

So dont underestimate a cavalier LOL. I know i dont have a Z24 and i never said my car was fast. But if he is a decent driver then be ready to have your ass handed to you unless u spray.
