what causes your trans to do this?

The shop that has my car noticed that first gear was grinding and reverse was slipping so they pulled it and this is what they found (pictures below) i am not sure whether or not i want to cry shoot myself in the head or beg my wife to let me spend the money.... sooo if anyone can explain what possibly could have caused this sort of damage. I just recently purchased this dsm and just want to know for my own sanity what i can bi*** about when people ask me why it needs to be rebuilt.

if im thinking right thats your diff and wheel hop can cause it or running 2 diffrent size tires

sorry buddy but no wheel hop here its a awd and that is multiple components its my intermediate shaft, reverse idler gear, pinion gear, and a gear out of the center differential and the center diff housing

AKA bell housing.

not that i know of i was told that is the case where the differential rides
