what are the signs of a bad piston ring

Are you burning oil? That is the #1 symptom...

Yup, low compression in one of more cylinders could indicate failing piston rings. It could also indicate a problem else where though.

you can run a leak down test. that puts air pressures in the cylinders and if you hear air in the throttle body you need some intake valve seals, if you hear air in the exhaustes "exhaust Valve seal" and if you hear it through the PCV valve than you need some piston rings.

Valve seals keep oil from entering the combustion chamber from the head - they don't seal the valves themselves. If air is escaping from anywhere in the head, chances are you need new valves altogether.

By the way, add frequently fouling spark plugs to the list. While this symptom could also indicate rich A/F mixtures, it could also be a sign that too much oil is getting past the rings, and thus, fouling the plugs.

Blue smoke on shifts or WOT can be a sign as well.

Only when i floor it that's when i see a cloud of smoke from my exhaust only at that time. It doesn't smoke at any other time.

when my 1g turbo was going bad, only at wot, but it would make a pretty nice white smoke cloud behind my car. Do a compression check or a leakdown test, also let your car cool down and feel your turbo its good to know you dont have any odd shaft play and it spins freely.

i got a problem like this too, my motor is built with .30 ross racing pistons and eagle rods. 1mm Oversize ferrera valves and retainers ect, balance shaft eliminator kit. I have a new precision gt35r oil cooled turbo in it, and after i hit 20 psi and shift at 6500rpm i get a big puff of blueish white smoke for a few seconds then it goes away!! any ideas? im gettin dsmlink in a week and having ams tune it just looking for any ideas? thanks
