Ok well, I had my car in the shop getting some new solid pipes fabricated for my intercooler, and they told me they heard a fairly distinct knocking that wasn't lifter tick:cry: and I probably needed new crank bearings, and had an oil leak at the oil pump seals, which also needed to be replaced, so a new timing belt job.

Well I finally got my car in the other day to get the work done, and they said the engine was pretty much shot and I was looking at a rebuild.:ohdamn::cry: So after taking some time to think some things over I'm getting it done, should be ready in about 5 to 6 weeks, about the beginning of spring :).

So I have never had a brand new engine and I am wondering what your guys thoughts and opinions are on breaking an engine in. I basically see two ways of going about it. A few increasingly harder launches to get the gaskets and rings to seal up and then drive it normal for a couple weeks, or, driving it softly while the rings and gaskets seal up and then do some successive launches in a week or two, though I could just be talking complete nonsense.

Sorry if this topic has been "beaten to death" I am pretty excited about getting a new engine and wanted to announce it at least. Finally people will stop making jokes about it being parked more than driven!! (knock on wood) :shhh:

Dont beat on it let it rev up to about 5k and let the engine brake itself back down. Keep varying the rpm's. I agree search it theres tons of posts on this already.

I had one shop put in my crank bearings, and the head on other than that i did everything else myself. I hate to lose money, now i know how do it myself got the manual and taught myself before i knew much as nearly anything about these cars.

How you plan to use the car will impact how you break the motor it. If your gonna be drag racing or auto cross, then drive it like you stole it. If its gonna be just a DD that will see boost on occasion, then do what was stated above by accelerating up to 5k in 3rd gear and let off the gas to let the vacuum seat the rings also.
