Alright, so I had the strangest issue today, PO I got the car off of said the center diff might have been welded so I started driving in circles, drive in 1 circle at a really low speed and didn't notice anything, tried going faster and while I was giving it gas, it felt like I was hitting a rev limiter at like 3k rpms, almost like an idle surge. Would a welded center diff do something like that or do I have larger issues that I should look into? I don't do much tight-angle driving so I probably wouldn't notice the tires chirping on turns or anything. The back=end also does kick out VERY easily, like taking a turn in neutral on damp roads and if I don't rev-match properly, I'll about lose the back-end of the car.

I do realize it is a very noob question, I just couldn't think of what exactly would cause the idle surge type thing. Car drives OK other wise, no power issues or anything in a straight line.

If you can turn the wheel full lock at low speed and don't have any chirping/binding in the rear, it's not a welded center diff. If I'm turning hard into a parking spot I have to back up a bit to park straight. The rear wheels will literally drag that bad. And this is with a welded diff from Jacks and stock viscous rear.

Not sure about the rev limiter thing though.

I'll have to just have someone drive the car in a circle and I'll look. Hope someone has some insight on that rev limiter thing. Its extremely weird.

could someone explain what he's looking for exactly? My rebuilt transmission is supposed to have a welded diff too, it'd be good to actually know it's there :thumb:

Will do, when there is dry ground LOL. If it makes more sense, its more like an idle surge and it feels like something is locking up when the RPMs climb, they drop and it unlocks. If its sounding THAT strange, I'm suspecting a blown center diff or something alike.

I'm trying to see if anyone can relate.

If yours is welded normally, you would have a locking of the tires on sharp turns at low speeds and the car should be pretty fishy in the rain. I guess I can test in the snow tomorrow if its welded or not. It'll just make your back tires turn at the same speed all the time.

Pull it out and look. A damaged center diff will display some of the same behavior as a welded one, until it breaks completely.

 * gulps*

What about emitting a sound like a sequential trans under load? "wooooooowoooowooooo".

If you have a welded center diff, it would take six people to push your car around a turn.

So put my car in full lock/neutral and try to push it... Sounds like a doable test without getting a ticket. I'm really more concerned about the rev-limiter thing, I have NO idea what could cause it. The only thing that changes from going in a straight line to a circle is the power/load displacement between the tires and the load on the power steering.

Is your car still auto? If so the rev thing isn't a limiter its something in your drivetrain jamming and and unjamming. Increasing the load thus increasing converter slippage. If your manual swapped already well, your about to break something

Well its not swapped, but I did get a manual...hmmm..

It will be extremely obvious if your diff is welded when you turn. You do not need people to watch your wheels when you turn. Your steering wheel will jerk and wheels will bind up. You will know if it is welded the first time you drive the car. Therefore, if you have any doubts, it is not welded.

If you are still Auto, then check you fluid level. Sounds like your TC is engaging/disengaging.
