So I was trying to get my inspection and I got wierd results. When they plugged in the device to read the settings on the ECU (EGR, Catalsyt..etc.) All it said was "Not Ready" across the board. They said that possibly it hasnt gone through the drive cycle so we drove around for an hour and still, nothing. I'm about to just track down a ECU and install it, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.
Thanks,
Kyle

'Not ready' usually means faulty diagnostics port connection (either on the car, or scanner device). Have you used DSMlink or logger ? Do they connect to the ECU?

No, I dont have any logging instruments. I was weighing my options now that I possibly need a new ECU. I might just order the ECU, Pocketlogger, and a SAFC. Although DSMLink sounds tempting...

This is, unfortunately, a common problem. You'll have to take the car to the mitsu dealership and have them reset the devices, then go directly to the inspection. It's an error somewhere in the firmware of the ECU, but mitsu hasn't fixed it. They'll charge you for the reset, too.

Yea, I talked to them about that and they said it was $75. I was just worried that wasnt going to fix it..

Yep, you are going to have to bend over and get hosed by the dealer. It will not fix the problem, only allow you to pass.

Last time I had it done, it cost me $135. Since then, I haven't driven my car more than 5000 miles / year, so I am exempt from testing.

Thanks for the help, but this a couple question came up.
1) Will this firm-ware reset help my tuning at all? I know my car doesnt run like it should, I use to be able to spin the tires untill top of 3rd gear.

2) With this port not working I assume it will affect me trying to use any logging device like Pocket logger, correct?

Thanks for the help guys..

The problem is not with the diagnostic port (OBD-II), it's with the ECU. The ECU is supposed to retain the drive cycle information as log as the battery is not disconnected. Some cars do retain the information and others reset all of the monitors when the vehicle is turned off. Sounds like yours is like mine and won't retain the monitor status.

Trying to set the monitors using the drive cycles will only result in a lot of wasted time. Hell, some of the drive cycles involve shutting off the vehicle part way through the cycle. Duh! :D

Anyway, the dealer hooks up the ECU to their proprietory MUT-II and forces the readiness monitors to set and then hooks up the car to the emissions machine. This is technically illegal in PA, as the vehicle has to be turned off prior to testing.

Wow, that was fun! :D

To answer your questions:

1) Nope, it won't hurt your tuning assuming that you are using an SAFC-II and not DSMLink. I am going to assume that you are not using DSMLink, as the 95 ECU's don't seem to have this problem.

2) You port is fine, or you wouldn't have been able to see that the monitors were "not ready".

Enjoy!

Thank you for all the help. I did look up these bulletins on iATN, and it apears as Mitsu knew about this issue and in response extended a 80,000 mile warrenty for it. I will scan the print out when I get home from work and I will also have more time to review the bulletin.

Ok, I got everything fixed and great news it was all covered under the warranty. If you have any questions just let me know..
