I get a weird clunking whenever I am on the gas. It seems to come in threes and the third seems louder than the first two. It speeds up with the car also. Car is a 97 GSX. Both front CV shafts have been replaced. I'm thinking possibly the driveshaft carrier bearing? Thoughts?

It sounds like it's coming from the right front, but it could possibly be coming from more of the middle of the car. It's kind of hard to tell.

I was either thinking that, or the intermediate shaft on the left front (between the transmission and the CV shaft).

I had a right front clunk. Turns out it was my "pod filter" bouncing on acceleration and hitting a part of the fender. I fixed it by slicing a piece of vacuum line (like a hotdog bun) and attaching it to the lip it was hitting.

I don't believe it's something rattling around since it goes with the speed of the vehicle

Sounds rotational and not related to motor our xmsn mounts. When the clunking starts does it stop if you let up off the gas? Is it worse when in a turn one direction or the other? I'd be a little surprised if you're able to hear anything with it in gear on lifts since there wouldn't be any resistance, but putting it on lifts would be a great chance to check the cv shafts, carrier bearings (not sure about 2G, but 1G has two), and the bolts connecting the driveshaft to the rear diff. Aftermarket cv shafts seem to go bad sooner than OEM, so don't rule them out just because they have been replaced unless you replaced them after this issue and the issue still remains.

my last awd did the same thing, i replaced bearings and eve nrebuilt the whole driveshaft and it still made noise. Maybe transfer case? I finally just figured i'd wait till something broke. 2 years later still doing it and sold the car in great shape. Who knows?
