Waterpump Woes

So my car would slowly start to overheat at idle, fans don't turn on.
Relays for fans are good. Fuse for fans are good.
I think the thermostat is sticking closed. I go to replace it, there's no thermostat.
So with it open like that, it shouldn't over heat so soon... unless the waterpump is bad.... right...?
Looks like the previous owner tried to bandage up this problem.

If the water pump was bad then you should be seeing a coolant leak by the pump, or at least hearing some grinding noise by the pump.

If your fans are not working properly then i would start with that. Did you check the fuse with a multimeter or did you eye it, fuses will get hairline cracks that you will never see with your eye but will prevent electrical current. Also i would hook the fan up to a battery or other power source and see if the fan itself is just bad.

If the fans arenet coming one just do it manualy mine overheated not fans, wired fans no problem.

I have never personally seen this happen, but oval track racers swear their car will overheat due to not having a thermostat. They say the coolant doesn't stay in the radiator long enough to dissapate the heat. What they run is a thermostat with the guts ripped out.

I don't see this being an issue at idle. Fans, are something I would look into. Not having them come on is obviously going to cause overheating at idle. Have you checked your fan switch? It should reside in your lower radiator tank.

If you're still having a problem with your fans fixed, and you still think you have a water pump issue, you'll have to pull the pump and look at the impeller. Coolant can become too alkaline, and could errode your water pump impeller. If that turns out to be the problem, you need to thuroghly flush your cooling system, and refill with coolant and distilled water. Also you can expect radiator leaks.

Apply 12V manually to the fans to make sure they are working. Then check the fan thermo switch at the bottom of the radiator.

What's the white plug on the bottom of the rad fan? That wasn't hooked up to anything?

It goes to the connector down by the fan it tells the fans when to turn on.

Can someone please tell me where the wire comes from? I pulled out the fan, and the bottom plug on the fan wasn't connected to anything, and I can't find where it's supposed to hook up to?

The fan was good, btw.

Wow good job Previous owner. Put in the new radiator without that switch thermo switch.
