wastegate problem? maybe?

never even heard of this before. was doing just basic tune up things and i looked down and noticed my wastegate vac hose was disconnected. i thought nothing of it at first but as i was re connecting it,it clicked..i still built 8 psi of boost as it was unconnected. technically if the wastegate was not seeing a vac source it would stay closed and over boost but it never did that. any ideas why it would do it?

car is stock 90 tsi.

Is this on the stock boost gauge or an aftermarket mechanical one? If it is the stock gauge then you have no idea what you were actually boosting to since they are not actual boost gauges and instead are load/rpm meters.

If it is an aftermarket gauge then I would suggest that you have a pre-turbo exhaust leak, a large boost leak, or a weak actuator that is allowing the wastegate to blow open.

Start with a new gauge if you don't have one, then do a boost leak test and fix your leaks, then get some Seafoam and run it into the P line from your throttle body and see if the car smokes before the turbo (seafoam makes a large amount of white smoke out of the exhaust).

aftermarket gauge. and ill re do a leak test. never had one before but might have sprung one

Try pulling on your actuator too, if it pulls easily you have a problem. My actuator is stiff to the point where it is very hard but not impossible to pull with one hand while the turbo is on the car.
