so i was about to go to school this afternoon and i started my car and there was a ticking sound in a pattern i didnt think anything of it was in a hurry get about a hundred feet down the road and my car dies i try to start it back up and it did but idled real low and i tried giving it some gas and nothing happened just died then wouldnt start just made a weird noise, so if you have any idea can you tell me what i messed up this time:confused:

hope its not to expensive.

With the timing see if all the marks line up. Like on both cam gears and the crank pully. You spin them using a half inch socket extension in the middle of crank pully. Theres a VFAQ on it I believe

ok so me and my dad jsut got done looking at it. last night i took off the vavle cover cause i thought maybe something had gone wrong and wanted to look and see if anything was out of the ordinary and nothing was really. so today we took a look at it and my dad wanted to do a compression check, but first i told him we should try and rotate the cam gears with a socket like someone had said earlier in this thread. so we did and he told me to try and start it to see what would happen and i said well what if it starts oil will go everywhere and hes like oh dont worry it wont start i jsut wanna see what will happen, so i did and sure enough it started and oil shot all over him, so i quickly shut it off so we put the valve cover on real quick and tried it agian and it started up for like 2 seconds then died it sounded like something locked up so he tried to turn the motor by turning the cam gears again and it would only go so far and then it wouldnt turn any farther like it was locked up on something what could this be idk.. but now when i try to start it it wont turn over at all. so if you could give me any ideas or point me in the right direction that would be great i tried to be as descriptive as i could so i hope you can understand what i tried to say just now, but thanks cause i want to get it running again cause i hate walking to school and walking by my dsm everyday in the morning in the driveway while on my way to school.

This sounds alot like what happened to mine. I heard a ticking noise, then it turned into a louder knocking sound. Then my car stopped and wouldn't start back up again. When I dropped the oil pan, there was a ton of metal shavings in it, and sure enough, I threw a bearing. I would drain the oil to check for any shavings, and possibly drop the oil pan to see if there is any peices of bearing in there. :(

That ticking/knocking was probably the timingbelt tensioner arm flopping about ..

time to take of the timing belt cover and have a look .

i took off the cover and it looked all fine.. so idk im gonna drain the oil and check for shavings tonight!WTF:beatentodeath::confused:

It almost looked like a silver liquid coming out with it when I drained it, the pieces of the bearing were just hanging out at the bottom of the oil pan. If you see anything like shiny silver pieces I would drop the oil pan and check what is missing :notgood:. Good luck and I am crossing my fingers for ya!

Ticking...do it smell funny as the car died...
Do me a favor. Pull out your ecu and just smell around it. If it smells like fish or caca
Its your ECU..why wasn't that asked in the first posts..

I think you need to have another look at your timing belt if you don't know exactly what to look for it can fool you if you're no very familiar with it. You need to make sure first that the tick marks on the balance shaft sprocket and the crank pulley line up with the alignment marks. Verify TDC then have a look at your cam gears. The tick marks on the cam gears should be perfectly linear to a straight edge going through the center of the cam gear bolts. If these are off your timing belt is not right. Also have a look at the tensioner pulley if it's not horizontal and instead more torwards the 9'o'clock to 11 o'clock region the belt most likely loosened.

ok so heres the deal, i didnt drop the pan, but my dad decided we should start with the simpilest thing first he said it was the starter. so we took that out and turned out that was bad so i got a new one and put it in, and still wouldnt start so my dad thought we should check the spark plugs to see if they were good. and we pulled them out and two of them looked like someone took a hammer to the top of it and tried to make a nickel out of it. so im guessing you guys were right when you said it was time for a rebuild LOL. dang this is gonna suck but will be good at the same time.

BINGO. Rayek! => your a 99 too! You are the 4th person I know within 1 month who had a 99 and spun a bearing. I swear, this must be an issue that is surfacing with 99's that are finally getting some mileage on.
