So my problem is I'm throwing a fault code for the speed sensor.

I've replaced the speed sensor 3 times with new units and I'm still getting the code for the VSS. I've made sure that I'm using the correct speed sensor for my car (97 awd 5spd), I've also checked the 3 wires on the connector that plugs into the sensor itself and it shows it has a good power and ground and the signal wire seems to be working. I'm assuming the signal wire is sending a correct signal because my speedometer is also working correctly. I've searched and searched for similar issues but I can't find any other thread where the speedo works and the CEL is still throwing a code for the VSS.

I'm open to trying anything to get this fixed because I cant pass emissions right now until I fix this and I'm almost 3 months late. Thanks for any help.

this might be stating the obvious, but you have cleared the code right?

and if your speedo is working that is really odd, I have never seen that before

maybe a faulty ECU stuck in stupid mode?

also I was always under the assumption that the VSS signal goes to the ECU 1st then its sent to the dash, so if that's the case that's really odd.

or are they separate signals? have you verified that the ECU sees the VSS via a scanner or logger?

Yeah, I did clear the codes and it always throws the cel after the 2nd time starting the car after clearing the code. Also I am using a 98-99 black box ecu with ceddy mods, and evoscan for logging. Also, I switched my ecu into another car and it wasnt the ecu with the problem. I also put a different black box in my car and still had the same problem.

I'm going to do a log right now to make sure the ecu see's a signal

Just logged and it displays my speed so i'm assuming the ecu is getting the signal.

Well Im all out of ideas, I would get a hold of a wiring diagram and figure out exactly what those three wires go to on the VSS go/do (it is three wires right?)

good luck man

I only have access to so-so diagrams @ home. I'm not sure I trust this one, but there are quite a few splices in the harness on the signal wire.
The wiring & the ECU/PCM is what I would concentrate looking at.

Well I figured out my problem.

Every time I use evoscan it acts kinda funky when it comes to checking DTC's and clearing them. For some reason when I would scan the CEL's it would pull up "vehicle speed sensor" with no code, I didn't think much of it other than I have speed sensor issue. So after 3 months of messing with speed sensors and not fixing the problem, I decided to check the CEL's with a different scanner, I used a cheap Mac tools obd II scanner and it said it was the rear o2 sensor.

So I disabled some bits in ecu flash to get rid of the rear o2 CEL and it cleared the CEL and has been fine since. Pretty weird that evoscan was telling me it was the speed sensor when it was really the rear o2.
