Ignore the MAFT post in subject. 2G MAF swap.... -.-
Bought a VR4 not to long ago - and I'm abit confused about some of the things. the SAFC II reads about 500RPMS below what its really at for the most part (sometimes 1000RPMs lower) and I was wondering why? Has anyone delt with this? (I've yet to retrace the wires, SAFC II came with the car.), abit worried because that could effect the cars tunning if the SAFC things is got to add so much fuel at 1000 RPMs when I'm almost at 2000... correct? Installed a datalogger I had laying around real fast, and it read the idle fine - along with everything else (was on point with the stock tach, temp, so forth). Along with that the SAFC II is reading that the cars knocking at idle, WOT, and everything else - most the time knocks of around 9-30 (from the SAFC II), car has afew exhaust leaks I believe, but at the same time my datalogger didn't get any knock readings at all, even at a 3rd gear pull from 2K-7K (which I can post if ya want, only running 10 psi right now) The cars running rich as hell... but I've never tuned before... also it tends to shut off from vaccum problems (some of the vaccum hoses are pluged) while its warming up it won't stall, it will idle around just under 2K, but once warmed up if I rev it up past 3K it has trouble recovering and idles like crap for afew seconds then recovers (idles around 250-600, babbles up and down between) I have to wait until the car almost comes to a stop in gear to prevent this (I have to leave it in gear while stopping until my car gets close to 1000, then take it out of gear... which I ain't used to I like to roll up to the stoplights miles away... :coy: )

Either way figured I would make a post, the MAF 2G Swap* seems to be installed correclty, and it was a pretty clean install - some of the wire jobs in the car are scary though. Whats your take on the SAFC II low idle, high knocking, stalling from vaccum?

Ignore typos... I'm tired... :boring:

Forgot about the SAFC RPMs being off for 1gen DSMs, problem solved on that note.

Ok the knock sensor on the SAFC does not work so dont even trust that. Use the logger. Also the stalling is probably just a tune up problem. Since you havnt listed your mods yet cant tell much from that.

Well I try to remember off hand. Greddy type-s BOV, 2g MAF, FMIC, 14B Turbo (stock injectors... 450s I think? can't remember.) Exhuast, I think the rear of its thermal. (downpipe and all, but someone ramed the car or slamed the downpipe into the speedbump, 1.5" indent, needs to be new...) Boost gauge, A/F gauge, SAFC II, datalogger, no wideband or anything other then that YET...

uh... No idea drivetrain wise, no idea what clutch... everything else is stock I believe...

Whata ya guys think of the e-bay "EVO III Big 16G + manifold" kits? Are the items junk? I trust simple things to ebay like tires etc,. but not sure about turbos...

I went ahead and tuned it "abit" when I mean abit I richen'd it up since the 2G MAS install... I'm not real sure how to tune but I've got a general idea... I think I wideband would help... but I'm not even going to bother tuning it - going to be upgrading turbo in the long run.

Going to test the knock sensor and make sure its working in afew days, someone told me to ignore the SAFC II knock, shoulda listened... I was worried for a minute. :tease:

It is missing alot of vaccum lines, which I'm going to start replacing sunday.

Heres a log from a 3rd gear pull think I got everything, remember I'm rather new to tuning... off hand I don't know how the SAFC is set, I just know I already made it abit richer since the MAS swap, and that its set to TH Point to 30/80. NE Points are like 1000, 1600, so on so forth until around 7000, or 7600 maybe. Any helpful tips guys? (I think the most i richen'd it up by it 10% at 1K, and 3 or 4% by 4K on LO, I haven't touched HI settings yet... not much idea on what I'm doing... )

You have a 2g mas and a MAFT? Which one is the ecu using? If it is using the mas then your bov is not recirculating which would cause problems. My SAFC reads exactly what my rpm gauge says. Check the wiring.

Well after looking into it - the main reason for the RPMs to be off is because the way lovely mitsubishi triggers the ignition coils, the 1Gs only seem to have this problem I hear... corrected it by setting it to 2 cylinders like I was told after I did abita searching.

As for the MAF, I didn't even realize what the hell I was typing till I looked over what ya said. It has a 2G MAF swaped into it, not a MAFT... really wish I could take back all of the drugs I did at a younger age... :toobad:
Joking.

Yes - and yes I know this can cause the car to stall) but when the car is in its warm-up cycle this problem doesn't occur, so besides increasing the idle I was wondering if there is anything else I can do? (I don't have a option with venting / not venting to atmo at this time, the hardpipe that came with the intercooler setup was ment for a larger BOV, so its on the bottom of the pipe (transmission side not hood side I'm going to be replacing the intercooler, and piping itself so I hope to cure the problem... (leak test while I'm at it before I start to do a turbo swap / serious tune)

So can someone help me get started on tuning? 2G MAF, Stock injectors, SAFC II, A/F Gauge, Datalogger...

Anyone get the ebay "EVO III Big 16 + Manifold" kit? Wondering if these parts are worth looking into...

Thanks for the replys so far fellas.

First your car will run like crap venting without a MAFT. Also if you havr the stock intake pipe and the vent tube is still open(wher the recirc goes) Your car will have a lean AFR at idle due to to much unregulated air getting into the system. This will cause your ecu to go nuts tring to find a idle. This soundl like your problem. So tuning without recir. is almost impossable. You really need to correct this situation before you go into tuning. If you like the vented bov then get a maft if not find a way to recirc.
I dont know about the evo kits on ebay someone else can help you out with that.

Its blocked off - injen intake or whatever, has a metal plate to plug to recirc on it - so its just venting and not pulling extra air. Plan to keep the 2G MAS, and get a new intercooler kit / stop venting in the future, wondering if I could learn how to tune now for the time being...

You can play with it but the car wont act right untill you get the recirc.

So my options are stop venting and go from there, or get a MAFT and still have the option to vent... might go with the GM MAS... :thumb:
