venting to the atmosphere

hi , can any of u guys tell me if its bad to vent to the atmosphere without the maf system and what could get damaged if i do it . thanks in advance for any of your help guys you been a lot of help to me because i dont know much about cars so this website has been of a lot of help to me . thanks
