I am looking into getting a new Intercooler here pretty soon and at the same time was thinking of going with the blowthrough setup as well. Before that i will get the dsmlink so i can start playing and learning. My question is, if i just want the BOV to vent to the athmosphere do i really need the GM MAF and MAF translator? Cause i remember a while back i was looking for the translator on ebay and some guy was selling it because was using something that let him vent the BOV and he didnt need the translator anymore. Just wondering if any1 knows much about that because i thought it might be the dsmlink? Not sure though.
So i guess what i wana know what other way is there to get the BOV the vent besides getting the translator.

As far as I know, if you want to vent, you need to run a blowthru setup unless you want the stalling, stuttering problems. The only way I think you may pull it off is if you had a full standalone that you may be able to incoorporate a function into that will compensate for the un accounted air. Good Luck with it, I'd go blowthru though :thumb: , just my .2

your prolly going to get flamed for this thread...but none the less, i would say the only way to Blow Off to the ATM without horrible reactions of bogging and such, a translator and maft is your best bet, plus you get the real benefits of it.....TUNING at the switch of a knob :thumb: get the translator youll love it with either dsmlink or a logger in the end :dsm:

Yeah i was just wondering cause i thought i had read some posts of people who actually ran into trouble using the Blowthrough and DSMLink together.
I will go with the translator and such, and since i might buy WI for the intercooler somewhere along the way (since i live in AZ we get over 90 or even 100 during summertime) but i guess i worry about that when the time comes LOL
Thx guys

Have any of you honestly vented your aftermarket BOV's? I hate the bench racer comments I always hear about venting BOVs. If you want to vent your BOV, and you have an aftermarket valve, and you dont mind knowing that your car isnt perfectly optimal, then vent it. Your car will not bog, your car will not die and sputter, it just simply wont run optimally between shifts. Years ago when I had my Type S I would occassionally switch between vented and recirculated and never noticed a single bit of difference. Definately never any boggin or sputtering issues, the same goes for a friend of mine with the Type S. Is it optimal to do this on a karmen vortex meter? No. Can you do it without any real world driving issues? Yes. If you want to vent and thats truly all you care about, then get an aftermarket valve and do it, dont listen to the bullshit internet babble that insists that you buy a 200 dollar piece of crap airflow meter in a custom mount in order to vent your damn valve. Personally my take on it, is instead of using the 200 bucks for a damn MAFT, combine that money with the money youd spend on intercooler piping, and start saving for a nice FMIC. There are enough options out there that for only a few hundred more you can have a very nice FMIC setup with full piping, instead of the crappy stock setup. Furthermore, have you ever owned the MAFT? It is NOT a good tuning device, its extremely poor at best. Those people such as me who own DSMlink see it even more. The stock 2g meter will take you to 50lb/min before it overruns, how many of you in this thread flow that much? The 3g meter will take you 20% further than that, very few dsmers ever will reach that point. Stick with the stock meter, your tuning adventures will be much happier, the maft is an overhyped DSM part that is poorly calibrated to the factory unit.

Can you tell I get irritated with the bench racing babble on the boards? :)

How is anything you talked about bench racing?

:thumb: :talon:

Ive vented for quite a while in the past without having a MAFT. I also have owned a MAFt since right around its initial creation. In fact I remember I created the original thread on dsmtalk where mike first brought up the idea of the MAFT years ago. Not that I had any say in the MAFt, but id definately say I have enough real world experience to give input, instead of simply spitting out what I read on the boards. So wheres the bench racing?

Thats what Im trying to figure out. Where is the bench racing? I always understood that bench racing was (how fast is my car going to be at the track, can i beat this mustang, what mods do i need to win this race) Just trying to clear things up. ;)

I was implying bench racing to be them making comments about what to do without having any real world experience on the issue. Perhaps my definition isnt the same? Thought you were implying my comments to be without real world backing.

The common issue with venting BOV's is the stock valves do not like to be vented. This is I believe where the belief that is it absolutely awful for a car to vent has come from. Venting the stock valves, especially the 2g valve, appears to give horrid results. Ive known quite a few guys however that have vented their aftermarket valves with quite literally no noticably ill effects. In theory the detrimental effects are still there, just in the real world whether or not you actually feel them and they make a difference is questionable.

some have had major problems with venting, some have had un-noticable effects. i've heard the same old debate over and over. if your making serious power and need acurate airflow monitoring for fine tuned arf's venting without proper copensation is stupid. who's willing to take that chance??

Just to try it a few times, I took off my recirc hose from my 1g bov, and my car would die between shifts. Not to mention I hated the sound. It was tinny and sounded lame as hell. I did it with my bro's type S as well, same effects, but with a better BOV sound. He vents his type-s on his MR2, and it makes no noticeable difference. I say buy the aftermarket BOV first, and if you want to blow it off rather than recirc, try it. If you notice no ill effects then go with it. If it messes with the way your car runs, don't do it. Either recirc or buy the MAFT setup, or run with a crappily running car. It's your choice. I recirculate, but that doesn't mean you have to. Don't listen to losers that post shit like "' :nono: :toobad:' man" over there.

I actually am having an issue with venting right now. I just bought a TurboXS RFL Type H BOV and I decided to let it vent atmospheric, and now my idle is very unstable. It revs about to 1400, then drops to 900 and does this like once every two seconds. It's a slow rev up, but drops fast. I haven't noticed any problems between shifts, but at idle it's a big issue. It sure didn't do this with the stock BOV so will going back to recirculating fix it?
