Valve met the piston....Is the piston OK?

I bought my new 95 gsx knowing that one of the pistons came in contact with valves. I was just wondering what would be the best way to get my engine running? Im looking to keep the car for a long while, but I want to keep the costs fairly low.

Should I replace the piston or not? Does the block look OK? If I replace the piston with 2gs, can i just put them in? Is there anything I have to do to the block? What are some of the worthwhile upgrades that I can do while I have the engine apart?..I was already thinking ARP head bolts. Anything else?

I had 2 valves hit one piston and when I put the motor back together it seems fine thus far. I don't know what the piston looked like, but the guy who did it mentioned it to me so it must have been pretty bad. I'm running 20psi on a 20G just fine thus far. Maybe just clean it up a little bit and you should be fine.

It's hard to tell how bad it is from those shots. It just looks like the valves somewhat 'cleaned' off the top of the piston. I'm sure it goes a little deeper than that, but it looks like it should be fine. Do you plan on taking the pistons out?

All I can do off a teensy web picture is speculate. It's almost certain that cylinder popped off a valve head, and it bounced around in the cylinder for a few smacks. Possibly two valve heads. Which makes cracking a piston much more likely, but still not certain.

It's your gamble- there's a fair bit of work in taking that piston out to inspect it, but much less work than hearing it once you're back together.

we need a better close up of that #1 piston to tell. Did the valve head come off of any of the valves or did it just tap it and bend the valves?? Nice deck prep though!!

What part of illinois are you from. I might be able to stop buy and check it out.

Ill definately get more pics today. I have no idea if the valves were broken off or just bent. This is exactly how i got the car...head off and all.

Im in gurnee, IL...45 min north of chicago if anybody can come down and give me some help.

I think I'm just gonna take the piston out, I don't want to chance it seeing as how I want this car to be fairly reliable. Is it hard to take out the piston? Will I be able to just pop another 1g piston in without any trouble?

Does the actual block look ok? The valve didn't hit the wall or anything, but will that little bit of rust bother me?

Take brake fluid and put it in there and see if it leaks out. Just enough to tell if it is going to drop. Pray like hell.

Jason I am about 45 min away from you.
The only problem I see is you want to keep this at a faily low cost and its hard to do when you start taking the motor apart. If I were to put just one piston in that motor I would get a used piston and new rings from the dealer or parts store. Reson for the used piston is wear has developed in it and it will match the others and the cylinder wall better because it is no longer perfectly round. I can get one for you if needed. Before I do that I would get a can of spray gasket remover from your parts store and soak the top of the piston in that stuff for 15 min to clean all the carbon off. Bring the piston to TDC to clean it. I would bet you are ok and wont have to pull that piston out. send me private message with your phone # and we can talk more. Taking the piston out is not hard if its a FWD. The oil pan just needs to come down and undo the rod bolts and push it up and out.

My timing belt skipped a tooth and all the intake valves hit my pistons. Dinged them up a little. I put the rebuilt head on and the car fired up with no problem. Cars running pretty damn strong if you ask me.

with the help of tsifreak, i have come to realize that the block is a piece of crap. We found GIGANTIC pieces of metal in the oil pan.....IM SCREWED

Well, Im still deciding on whether to just replace the block or sell the car altogether....as of right now im leaning towards selling it.

Thanks again tsifreak
