Pardon my ignorance on this, but why cant he use it in place of the main o2 sensor?
 
Im not sure of the exact distance but you need to place like 32" away from mani/turbo so you dont burn out the sensor and get bad readings.

Someone else can answer this better im sure.

I believe that it is because the ECU relies on the front O2 to determine what's going on in the engine. The secondary O2 sensor is there to determine if the cat is working. If the two sensors read the same, then the ECU thinks the cat is no longer working, as there is no difference between the two readings. That's what I was told a while ago, forgive me if it's wrong.
 
so i cannot put it in place of the sec. o2 sensor? where do I have to put it? Ill buy th bung piece i need to do it but people say its right near the second o2..im not getting link due to not wanting to push more then 300-320 whp so with the afc,wideband,maft should i be able to get a decent tune to make it run better then what it is now? thanks
 
but if i wanted to put it in place of the second o2 sensor would it still read right? if not where in loaction of the second sensor would i want to put the wideband sensor?
 
If you have no cat you should be A-OK, if you do have a cat I think you should still be ok, but I'm not sure, I dont think we've ever done any tuning with a cat actually installed on the car... Something something global warming something.
 
To answer your questions, you can't put it in the front O2 bung because the ECU needs the 0-1volt step function signal from the oxygen sensor to operate in closed loop. The wide band gives a 0-5 volt ramp function that the ECU can't use. Some wide band sensors have a narrow band (stock) simulation, but I don't believe the AEM does. As for placement, I believe you just need to get the sensor away from extreme heat so it doesn't "burn up". The AEM sensor should be heated so it can go any distance from the motor. You do not want to run it after the cat if you have one as the oxygen content of the exhaust gas will be different than before the exhaust went through a cat.
