I have an oil leak from a freshly rebuilt engine that is dripping off the slave cylinder and flywheel protector plate behind the transfer case. I though it was the oil pan gasket, or crankshaft seal.

I pulled off the t case and protector plate, and felt around in the bell housing, and engine to find there was no oil in those areas.

I threw some RTV in the bolt holes of the protector plate cause it looked like thats where it could have been coming from and it still leaks.

Im dumbfounded where else this leak could be coming from. Im 100% positive its engine oil, not trans fluid or clutch line fluid. theres nothing leaking above the bell housing so it isnt the head gasket or anything on the head. Any ideas?? Maybe i didnt seal the protector plate bolts well enough? anyone know if there could be a leak from these bolts and how i should properly seal them?

Thanks!

UPDATE: STILL LEAKING

pulled the transfer case and protector plate off completely and started the engine on jack stands. oil still leaks after warming up, but its not coming from the protector plate bolts or t case..

what the hell could be causing this??? theres no oil below the head gasket at all. theres no oil in the bell housing. its just dripping off the slave cylinder.

UPDATE #2. most likely found the problem.

My brothers car has a very similar problem. I'm re-doing the oil pan right now to see if that solves it.

From the sound of it though, if you are sure it's not the rear main seal or headgasket and it's not gear oil nor clutch fluid. The only place it could be coming from, is the oil pan or return line possibly.

There is also a chance of having too high of crankcase pressures that could possibly cause this. You can check if you have high crankcase pressure by starting your engine, revving it up and see if you feel any air escaping from the valve cover tube that normally goes into your intake pipe.

it ended up being the plug in the oil galley for the cylinder squirters. when the engine was rebuilt, that plug must have not been sealed during re-instillation. that problem is now fixed, time to rebuilt the turbo cause its burning mad oil :/

A little late but I had the same symptoms and it was my oil return from turbo, resealed it 2 times before got the idea from reading to use copper crush washers on the bolts. I thought RTV on the threads was enough and maybe it is for others but not for my case. No more drips...

So your cylinder squirters are removed but one was not pluged up?

But how would that affect the oil leaking from the oil pan?? Unless, you are talking about some other plug WTF

Sounds like he is referring to the galley plug in the end of the block.

Center section or oil pan bolts?

Center section or oil pan bolts?

I never had a problem with the center section bolts leaking, but it was the pesky oil pan bolts. After reading This thread a little bit, I looked at the Mitsu ASA parts program and sure enough there are these washers labeled as "gasket" in the program

P/N - MF660031 / 12784S

But I had already retapped the threads oversize for 1/4-20" so I just used a couple regular 1/4" copper crush washers from my awesome eBay assortment ;)

Thanks for providing the Part number on that. ;)

What I do any time I drop the oil pan on any DSM I own is drill the holes out a small bit and run a bolt through each hole. I then tack weld the bolt head to the inside of the oil pan. This provides solid studs that you can torque down on without worrying about stripping anything out. No need for crush washers, in all truth. Just gasket - torque - no leak.

AN Fittings on the oil pan - They work, but damnit are they a pain in the future. Haha.

Stiff...annoying..braided lines. And lots of new little holes in your fingers when you decide to unhook it in the future. :p

Haha I see, yes I know what you mean. It wasn't so bad on the FPR setup but other times it is.

I'll just scar up my hands with a belt sander a couple weeks prior ROFL

I have the same leak, the oil plug galley. It is leaking inbetween the block and trans, only a few drops. The people that build the motor said the machine shop used the wrong plug so I have to take the trans off to put in the proper little plug.

Basically I feel your pain, I have to pull the trans just to change out this little plug to fix my oil leak. SUCKS...
