So I bought a universal precision fmic - next time I'll save myself the headache and just buy a kit - Anyways, I'm about to mount the fmic and I was looking for some recommendations. I was thinking of running two aluminum pieces (welded on the top of the core) from both sides to crash bar supports. What do you guys think? I have pics of the fmic in my gallery.

That is just what I did for my old intercooler. but, I take my bumper off all the time so that got annoying when I had to take off the intercooler couplers everytime.

geez, you would have to cut a massive hole in the front bumper to use that thing. I bet it looks mean with the bumper on.

OP, I just checked your sweet red X link and that thing definitely looks tall enough to mount the same way I did mine. Have someone weld brackets to the top of it and bolt them to the same place mine is bolted. Between those brackets and the piping it's very solid.

how much do those brackets flex though? I was thinking that as you drive down the road it may bounce up and down a bit. Over time, that could create a problem

Do you think you could fit a right-angle piece of metal with a brace across the corner? That may add more rigidity.

I think the two brackets on the top welded to the core, and the piping coming out both sides of the turbo will be plenty of support. Once I get it all together, we will see how sturdy it is.

Exactly. If I grab the intercooler and shake it the entire car moves. If you're really worried, adding some supports to the bottom isn't that hard.

Nice setup you guys have there.. just be careful when mounting the pipes because when aluminum rubs against things overtime it will rub a hole through it. I know its hard to believe but it happens.. just my 2 cents.. but nice fab work there guys.

thats some good advice my friend had that problem and had no idea why his car was hitting fuel cut and didnt know why until he finally took my advice and checked all the intercooler piping

i welded 2 pieces on the bottom of flat alum stock and bolted it to the lower rad support there.. then i went from the center top with a threaded piece welded on, and made a bracket that bolts to the hood latch and to the top, its very solid mounted.

I went with the precision 600hp size, yours looks like the 750hp size. I still have never understood why people love to go so overkill on their intercoolers, i guess its just a for looks ricer type thing? Unless ofcourse you plan to make #'s in that power range.

Goodluck. You should be fine doing it this way instead of a kit, precision makes top notch products, and its not all that hard to route 2.5 or 3" piping if you can get creative.

Haha I wish I knew how to weld - I'd like to learn someday though - I took it to a fabrication shop down the street and told the guy what I wanted, and he did the welding. I wanted to mount my fmic the way you did, but it was just easier to find the pieces to do it this way, it seems pretty solid though.
