Hello all,

I have been dead set on building up my 420a after reading about how pricey the 4g63 swap is to do. My question to you guys is would you go ahead and do the swap if you just found a wrecked 2g talon with the 4g63turbo engine and exact same front end as my 99 eclipse rs?

I may be able to get the car for free or very very cheap and I could just take the engine out and wiring harness etc.. even the transmission if its a manual. What kind of other parts etc.. am i going to need besides that car and the part sit will provide? The car has front end damage but no damage to the core structure aka pristine engine.

Let me know what you guys think or if you need more info let me know. I am a novice at this but I think this find will allow me to do it. I was planning to spend close to $3000 on the 420a and I figure it has to be cheaper than to swap out these two so I would have some left over to mod up the 4g63 right?

It is doable, but it is by no means a bolt in affair. the ENTIRE wiring harness has to be swapped, the motormounts need to be fabricated, subframe/crossmembers need to be swapped, frame needs to be notched, etc. Its a lot of cutting and welding. If you have the skills, i say go for it. Just know that its a very difficult swap. there's about 6 4g63 swapped avengers (engine bay almost identical to 420A eclipse), and one 4g63 swapped eclipse as far as i know.

Like everyone's stated, the swap isn't a easy process.

This isn't a silly Honda. Our cars are a little more involved, sell that GS and get you a GSX or GST.

You still have to fabricate shit for the hondas. Yes you can buy different motor mounts now for a lot of the swaps... But its still cheaper to just make it your self.

If you have no clue what has to be done, yes there is a 99% chance you will not DIY unless you have someone that does know what needs to be done to hold your hand.

I have no clue what in the hell that guy is talking about on Talk. The only thing we had to cut/weld on the 2 6 bolt into RS swaps we did was pull the entire harness and ecu. Run the 4g63 harness, install 4g63 ecu, cut trans mount out of a junk car. Weld it in. I can't say how exaclty the welding needs to be done, I don't weld for shit, my step dad did it. He also welded some 1/4th inch steel in front of the shock tower and we drilled a hole straight through and used a bolt with a nut and washers instead of welding a bung on the other side. The we just swapped the k-members between a 420a and 4g car. Though you might be able to move the front roll stop forward or backward. We just figured it was easier to pull the parts we knew would work from the wreck car.

I mean you guys act like its 4,000 engine mounts you have to deal with. Its 4, 2 of them are easy as shit to fix, and the 3rd is a bolt on change, and the 4th, well its been 2 years since we did the last swap, so It was either really easy and I don't recall, or it was really hard and I've repressed it.\

I think the biggest issue with our cars is that you can't re-use the trans or axles or really anything involved with putting power to the wheels. He I don't think the exhaust even lines up. But if your good enough at welding to fab the mounts, exhaust is your last worry.

Edit :

Holy hell, I read the rest of that thread. And the way that guy did it is WAY more work than its worth. WAY WAY more work.

We did use the 6 bolt Driver's Side engine mount though.

If you dont have a GST please update your profile. Ok lets see 3000 dollars, a n/a eclipse. My guess is the eclipse is worth maybe 3k at the most I dont know how clean it is. 3k + 3k = GST/GSX money ! WHY DONT YOU PEOPLE JUST BUY THAT TO BEGIN WITH ? Then when you do the swap its just gonna be like a stock 2g turbo. I dont think I ever hear 1g guys talk about this.

Personally I would just throw your 3k in the bank save a little more and but a gst/gsx, and keep the gs as a dd. That's just IMO these cars are so old now there is no way I would waste the time and money on a swap when the gst/x are getting a lot cheaper than they use to be. If you dead set on it good luck hope you have another dd because it will take a while.

I knew id get some hate responses for this thread. I just wanted personal confirmation on the nightmare. I am not going to do it and I do not want to buy a GST or GSX anymore I am going to get the full potential out of the 420a and put a turbo on it. Thanks everyone for the input and advice. You can see my new thread about my final conclusion and the parts I am buying to get me where I want to be.

You're gonna get the full potential out of the 420a ? Or is the 420a goig to get the full potential out of you ?

As others have linked, it can be done. Anything is possible if you have fabrication skills or deep pockets.

As others have pointed out, we see threads like this all the time and they almost always end in an argument....so to the Graveyard you go.
