So I've been searching around QUITE a bit today but can't seem to find a definite answer. I just ordered my new clutch setup (ACT 2600 w/ 6 puck unsprung) I am ready for the harshness and noise but my more serious thought is reliability. Am I going to be destroying this trans with this clutch disk? I believe the transmission is stock but looks to have been rebuilt at some point. Anyone else running an unsprung disk or puck style clutches? Any input would be awesome. I'm only running a small 16g on e85 around 23-24lbs of boost. Nothing crazy but nothing to sneeze at anyway I'll be upgrading to a td06 20g pretty soon. Thanks for any input in advance.

My sprung 6-puck disc does just fine, even for having not been adjusted properly for over 30k miles. When I switched transmissions, it did develop an engagement sqeaking noise, but other than that it works just fine

You mean unsprung?^ I'm asking about unsprung 6 pucks. And why did you have to switch transmissions?

You said anyone with experience with "puck-style clutches," and the reason I changed transmission is because my second gear synchro was shot, and I bought a TRE stg 2. the only difference you'll see is that if you dump the clutch a lot you'll damage the splines more than an unsprung clutch, but you would have to abuse the crap out of it, vs. the sprung clutches that may fail if not broken in correctly.

I had an act 2900 solid 6 puck in my car. Loved the thing! If you slip it a little too much leaving a light it will chatter, but once you get the feel for it its not a problem. I love how connected the drive train feels to the engine without the springs.

I have 20k miles on a clutchnet unsprung 6 puck, XTD stage 3 pressure plate. All dd miles not much chater with mine. I have a issue with 4th but I dont know if its just the way the trans was or not (its got 230k on it with a rebuild at some point)

If you have an untouched 2G trans, the solid hub disk will not harm it as the synchros in a 2G trans are not as prone to mushrooming.

You will get a lot more crankshaft torsional whip and harmonics through your trans, and drive shaft, with the solid hub disk, so it will be a little more annoying to the driver due to those noises. I call it the 'womp womp' noise.

A common misconception is the springs on a disk are there for smooth engagement. That is not true. In fact, you will get worse engagement, and more chatter in the 'friction zone' with a sprung disk. The springs are there to absorb that crank torsional whip to keep things quiet. If you don't mind a little more drive-train noise, I would also go for the solid hub disk as it's the most reliable disk out there from what I have seen. They also have less weight to them for quicker shifting and will live longer.

i had an unsprung 6 puck with a 2600 on my dsm for about 5500 miles and then my trans blew, could have been cause of the torque though. all i know is my solid disk was glased to hell after 5500 miles of daily driving. i switched to a sprung setup. for my shep stage 3 trans.

my 3rd 4th sleeve shattered. awaiting conformation from shep but here is what my solid 6 puck looked like before i swaped it. still had plenty of pad, just glazed.

i did do plenty of launches in that 5500 miles though :) and my splines look fine, how ever i never DUMPED the clutch, i used the ebreak to preload.

Nice ^ Yeah I'm going to be staying away from any harsh launches until I have money saved just in case the trans does blow. Thanks all for the replies. And I don't mind the noise. I love the race feel and noise to a DSM.

The 3rd gear hub on 2g's has a tendency to explode once you start making in the 400lb/ft range.

I have a 2600 w/ unsprung 6 puck and solid motor mounts. Only 45 miles on it, so can't say anything about longevity, but it feels very connected.

I've been daily driving on an XTD Stage 4 unsprung 6 puck. Worth every penny IMO. On my old setup and clutch I had 30k miles on it with no issues making 423awhp. I changed the disk on the new setup not because I had to, but for preventative maintenance. I would not hesitate to use an unsprung on a daily.

Once you get the hang of it, you won't get chatter.
