Uh oh - Is my motor toast? :(

Okay..

So I'm sure I'll catch some flak in this thread for doing this but oh well. I won't lie, circumstances got the better of me.

Well I just so happened to end up going pretty fast. I never intended to go as far as I did but, well.. Long story short my speedometer was buried for a quite awhile and the car was still pulling.

When I let off, I eased into the brakes and downshifted, gradually pulling the e-brake and releasing it over and again a few times. I then turned back and drove the car home with no issues, just kept it at a nice 2-3k rpms to give it a rest. Got it home, got out popped the hood and made sure everything was in order.. I never showed more than 2-3 counts of knock during the run.

I listened for noises and such, nothing at all, ran nice and smooth as usual.
I turned it off, went to bed.

Got up and drove it to school the next day, no issues. Come back after a couple classes, started it and hear a faint knocking. Go to engine bay, didn't see anything. Sounded like from the motor. Rev'd it but it seemed like it wasn't there with higher RPM's as if it wasnt rpm dependant.
Oil pressure is still perfect.

I took it straight home, parked it. Couple hours later I go back, and start it. While starting I swear there was like a rough, grinding sound coming from it or something? But when it started, there wasn't that knocking sound - but it did sound like something was off somewhere.

Any ideas?
I'll be pulling off the timing cover and all tomorrow to check it all out.

Wow, well calling you stupid for topping a car out will do no good. Just look at wreck pictures of cars that were "only" going 80, that did it for me. I love acceleration, but not going fast. Plus most roads arent maintained well enough at all to go that fast, and tires ect ect..

On the topic of your engine, something could just be rubbing on a belt you will just have to look around real close at where the noise is coming from. My Camry made a weird noise that sounded like a knock on and off for a while until one day i put my hand on the timing cover and it got really loud, turned out the back of the timing cover was touching the timing cog.

Well the goal really wasnt topping out my car, I already am pushing the limits of the rules of the site and what I was doing I can't put here.

But Nevada highways are well.. hard to explain if you haven't been in Nevada.
Unless you're on the MAIN interstates, going 2 hours on the old highways and seeing one other car is something to be impressed by.

Anyway, not justifying my actions.. I know people don't agree with them.. that's their issue.

Anyways, yeah I'm really hoping its something in the timing area. I've been worried to start it to listen more incase of something happening if it is and the belt slipping. So I'll just pull that apart tomorrow.

Did you check your crank pulley yet? Mine did something similar and the crank pulley came loose and was quivering, making a knock sound that wasn't rpm dependant.

And yeah you won't get much love for going that fast, from the sounds of it I gathered you were racing someone?
Ignore the flamers.. I know I wont build a car and only play with it once every month or other month when I can afford to go 2 hours to the nearest track. I don't have any problem with it as long as it doesn't endanger others, and I know Nevada's old highways there ARE no others LOL

Could be a few different issues. Are you seeing any smoke or overheating during or after your drive? A few more details would be helpful. My tick came from the lash adjusters, so I replaced them with the OEM Revised lash adjusters and that fixed it. Good Luck finding your problem. Let us know what you find and there's any more information you can provide and maybe we can help you better.:thumb:

I've had the pulley thing happen also, it was more of a rattle on mine than a knock though. I've also had the lower timing cover rattle at the bottom around the oil pump area. I would double check all nuts and bolts first just to make sure its not something simple, especially if you have poly mounts and no balance shafts.
