this poor car has seen some stuff in its short life. hasnt ran for about 10 year. had hundreds of mice living, dying, crapping, giving birth to baby mice in it. it's zombified rotting corpse SHALL live again. here it is today.

motor out, probably put the spare 7 bolt in the background in after giving a full tune up, replacing some wiring, most all the hoses, the interior is mostly gutted, partially cleaned. it will be my DD in a couple months.

really just logging for my own beneffit. i do not think many people are interested in a stock restoration that is not going to be some 500hp monster.

ive got a laundry list of parts in, and it is getting a few upgrades, but nothing that can't be explained away.

the pulled motor ended up being questionable so the spare will definatly be going in after a light tune up. it is mounted on my engine stand. motor mounts where in FAIR condition so i filled between the gaps with window weld, salvaging as much of the OEM rubber as possible.

after about 1 months worth of detailing the interior weekly the good news is the seats were salvageable. all of the plastic was degreased, then cleaned with soap and water, then scrubbed with plain water, and no longer smells of dead animals. the headliner has sean better days but cleaned up o.k. the carpet and rear trunk board was a total loss. it will all be replaced.

moving forward i should have a good start on the timing job this weekend. also i need to swap over the A/C compressor. test the starters and decide rather i will reuse one or put a new one on for piece of mind. same with alternator. the A/C clutch needs replaced, the compressor seems to be fairly new, and they are expensive, so i will be re-using it and hoping for the best.

NO RUST ANYWHERE!!! where can you leave a car out in the elements for 10 years and get no rust? a desert... errr, well southwest kansas. basically a dessert.

electrical seems to be usable. a few broken clips, 1 or 2 chewed wires. all of the plug wires have been destroyed. and the upper fuel line is trash. it can be replaced with a filter to rail kit so not an issue.

i could probably type our 3 more pages of observations and progress but i am tired of typing (talking to myself) for now. i will probably take some pics of the timing and engine clean up if i get to it this weekend. not something exciting, who has been near a DSM and not seen a timing job 3 or 400 times?

i think i will do a write up on detailing, buffing, and maybe painting. painting has been covered a lot on the forum but i will be painting a bumper and hood and probably blending into the stock colors and then clear the entire car.

i should have covered upholstery detailing... remember there was buckets full of DEAD rotting animal material in this car when i started and i am reusing everything except the carpet.

engine going back together. new timing components, new oil pump. need to fix a big dent in one of my oil pans and then mount the pan and turbo, and the rest of the accessories. goal of running installed engine by DEC 1.

then i can start on the interior build up.

i use them a lot on budget/stock replacement cars. the thing to watch out for is that you get a fresh one, not one that has been setting in the warehouse for 10+ years. other then that i would run them all day long on a bone stock car. the pulleys and hardware i have never had any issues with. the belts i have had a few come dry rotted and if you try to use them they fling apart exactly like the one in that post.

$55 more for an OEM timing belt > $500 for new valves, guides, and machine shop labor.

If you like using them, more power to you. I was only pointing out what I remembered from that post I saw years ago.

Making progress, I did the same to a 90 and DD it. Dig the TRX in the back ground :hellyeah:

the TRX has a custom 303 top end kit. A/S carb and centermount exhaust. the best part is passing all of the kids with there loud 450 to 600 cc 4-strokes and the look on their faces when i stop and let them catch up to me. i built a stroked ported blaster for my wife, it has pink and purple plastics. it will cruise over any sand dune in the area in pretty much any gear, fun stuff.

takes me back to when i first got my car,
it was sad looking, but now its a mustang killer:D

i enjoy getting cars and motorcycles that are at the end of their life and fixing them and reselling them. did a V6 chevy Z24 about this time last year. neat little cars but the intake and head gaskets in chevy's are garbage. AND while there is not a lot of room in a DSM engine bay, it takes like 4-6 hours to pull the engine. a small chevy or pontiac plan on killing a full day to pull a motor out.

i haven't exactly figured out how to break it to the wife that i have no intention of selling the 1g, 2g, or 3g that i have now.

Reminds me some what of my 92 talon, not as bad as yours probably was but I do know the feeling. I had body panels to replace on mine so your very lucky to find such a minty state of car. More pictures please!!

I hate the stupid montana vans did work on one for a buddy...yeesh! Leave it to the domestics.

yeah body work needed on this car is fairly minimal. some idiot used sheet metal screws to mount one of the side skirts after it started to come off. there is a fairly good sized dent in the hood that is too deep to be pulled, i have not deicded if i am going to go with alight weight hood or just a aftermarket steel hood. and it needs the front bumper replaced.

i might actually try stuffing the motor back in this weekend.

provided it fires up i will work on getting tags and insurance and a new windshield. the windshield is cracked up enough that it would get me a ticket.

then things like carpet and some of the interior bits that are missing, and a stereo. the stereo wiring is a mess not from mice either. i am sure the window motors are trash. long slow road but really this car was free, since i turned a profit on the rest of the stuff i got when i picked this one up. just the money to fix it up is all i have in it. if i sold it after i did nothing but get it runnin i would turn a profit so its all good.

and no, it is not for sale.

Subscribed. I'm glad to see a stock restoration since other sites do not even allow you to start a build thread on a stock restoration. Anyways I will be following this one closely since my son bought a 92 Eclipse that had been sitting for 7 years and we are working on getting it running again. Unlike yours his interior was beautiful but the exterior will need to be painted. Keep up the good work!

yeah, no matter what i am building i never venture too far away from having a stock look to it. im really not into looking like i am driving around in a car that the bat-mobile vomited.

Don't forget that rubber seal going around the mounting bolt holes on the fuel pump hanger assembly.
Looks good Keep it up!

yeah it was actually in good shape. grimy but not rotten. i cleaned it up and it is installed on the hanger already.

when i get the front bumper and hood sorted out i will paint it. probably just pearl white with pearl black top. so it looks fairly stock unless you really look at it. thinking about doing a hood design using my kids hand prints.... dunno for sure yet. paint is probably a year away optimistically.

I like pearl white the lexus is a nice color code, im thinking painting mine the factory teal color.

its too much of a pain to go with a totally different color then what the car currently is. door jams, engine bay, undersides of hood and deck, floorpan. the car was white and black already so if i just go with pearl white and pearl black then all that stuff will be close enough that most people wont know it didnt come that way. i may work in my garage but that doesnt mean it has to LOOK like i work in my garage.

FML, i swear most of the crap i have ordered has been wrong. the crank seal i ordered for the 7-bolt engine i just assumed was correct and never actually opened the box. yeah not even close. motor install helled up because i assumed the part i ordered and the part i received should be the same. my parts shelf is all 6-bolt stuff so i do not have another. i thought briefly about not changing it or using the used one of the spare motor, that would be asking for trouble though.
out one more week i guess.
