I have read the tuning guide many times and also done some searching but I am kind of confused on turbo sizes... I hear the words T25 14b b16g 20g T3/T4 small 16g.... but what psi do they flow?? and I am kind of confused because I read posts that said 16g at 10 psi compared to T25 at 10psi will give more hp because of more air flow? aghhh I don't know a thing :rolleyes: I guess what im saying is there are many different sizes of turbos, I need a guide or something

The above specs are measured at 15psi compressor air flow. I didn't get into turbine flow or actuator settings because of the detail and length of explanation. There's more, but I don't have all the specs. I'll tell you what I know. I'm not including any more of the small TCO,TDO, or TEO4 units because they don't apply to our cars. Nor do they have any relevance to the point being made here.

OK! That's enough, I couldn't find the combination which integrated the elusive -23G- compressor wheel. I called Mitsubishi to inquire about this so called -23G- wheel, they had no record of ever producing anything called ~-23G-. I was advised of the possibility someone may have cut down a -25G- wheel and called it a -23G-. All of the above are about 50% of the combinations available over the last 5 years. Many have been discontinued, most others are for trucks. I put them in here to let you all know what is or what was available. Hope This Helps...

What is the meaning of 14B, 16G, 20G?

The turbo that is OEM on the 5-speed is a Mitsubisho TD05H with a 14B turbine wheel (on the compressor side) and another (I don't know the name/number) and a 060 housing. What the "16G" turbo has is several things. The 16G refers to the compressor wheel. What happens is there are several TD05 housings (compressor) which can accomodate different wheel sizes. There are also two (!) 16G wheels, a large and small. The large 16G was shipped until around Jan 95 and the small 16G have been around for some time. Most likely the 16G you will find will be the small 16G (although the 7cm housing is still readily available).
The other difference is that the turbo has a larger exhaust side housing, hence the 070 or 7 centimeter housing. The wheel in the exhaust side is the same but it is clipped.
Another option is the 20G wheel, but a true 20G wheel will ONLY fit into a TD06 housing, no matter what anyone says as the wheel is physically too large to fit into a TD05 housing (I know because I have a TD06 compressor in my car and the wheel is REALLY big). The hybrid 20G most DSMs run is a 7cm 16G turbo with a 20G compressor wheel and housing.
But in Mitsubishi terms, the larger the number in the 13G, 16G, etc line the larger the compressor wheel and hence more air can be moved. So which turbo has the 16G wheel? The standard upgrade/heavy industry/Stage I, etc are all the same and is the next step up to the stock turbo, and offers a really nice unit for the price as other options can become costly.

You are on the right track. Bigger turbos will push more air at the same PSi then smaller turbos. For example, take a 14B (stock turbo on a 1G) and a T-25 (stock turbo on a 5-speed 2G) and run them at 15PSi. The 14B will push more air then the T-25 because it's bigger. But bigger isn't always better - for example if you take something like a turbo made for a diesel truck and slap it on your 2.0L 4G63 4-cylinder, it will take FOREVER to spool up and reach its potential - but when it does fully spool (it might be at like 7K RPMs tho) it will kick you in the pants and your car will speed ahead like it was shot out of a rocket launcher ;)! Now take a small T-25 (stock turbo on 2G 5-speed) or 13B (stock turbo on 2G automatic tranny) turbo and slap it on, and it will spool up fully by 3-4K RPM (sorry dont know exact numbers) but it won't nearly be as powerful.as a bigger turbo. Now these two examples are the extremes of a "scale". You have to balance it out for your needs. Lets say you autocross. When autocrossing you don't use much power in the upper RPM ranges, so you would benefit from a smaller, faster spooling turbo. But lets say you dragrace. You are always in the high RPM range, so you would benefit more from a bigger, more powerful turbo. I hope this helps! I tried to explain it as simple as I could. I'll explain one more quick thing thats more advanced - hybrid turbos. I'm still learning about these so double check this info LOL. These are turbos with smaller exhaust "wheels" but large compressor wheels (like the "wheel" (is that even the correct term) that pushes the intake air). So the exhaust wheel will spool fast (less mass for the exhaust gases to push so it will spin faster) but the compressor wheel will still push tons of air cause its big - the compressor and exhaust wheels are hooked together with a shaft. The exhaust gases turn the exhaust wheel, which then turns the compressor wheel. As the compressor wheel spins, it pushes the intake air into the intercooler, which then goes into the throttle body.
 
Yes this is helping out much :thumb: My needs are for a turbo with a faster spool up time because I wont be spending alot of time in the high rpm range. Is the 16g a good choice for around 300 hp and good spool up times?? also, at what rpm does the stock spool at?? isnt it like 3k or something?
 
on my old car the 14b would start spooling at around 1300 and would reach full around 3800, the 16G on my new car pulls alot harder in low rpms and keeps spooling for longer
 
The 16G is one of the best street turbos out there. You can make descent power and the spool up is almost identical to the stock 14b. People have gone high 11's on small 16G's... think about that.
