Turbo shot?

Yesterday on my way home from sheetz my brother was egging me on so i give it a little boost, but all of a sudden when im hitting boost it sounds like a muscle car or a cummings diesel, very loud low rumble noise. If i go back into vacuum pressure and drive all motor i dont hear it. I havent been able to check in out yet but i could only assume the turbo is shot or i have an exhaust leak?

Car is a 97 Gst with 62k miles on the original motor. Only mods are fuel rail and catback.

Edit - the turbo burns a good bit of oil as it is, if it is the turbo i have a 14b to put on but being in high school i cant have my car out of commision for more than a day.

If you're worried about the turbo, pull off the snorkel tube and check the turbo for in/out and side/side shaft play.

You sure the noise is from the exhaust?

It sounds like you should check the exhaust manifold really well for cracks and leaky sealing.

Im not 100% on where the noise is coming from, i could only think its those 2 because of it only happening when i hit boost. I was gonna check for shaft play but the car was far too hot and it was 1am when it started happening and i have work from 6am-2pm today but ill check that when i get home.

If anyone has any more input please reply asap this is my DD, im 17 and repairs need to be made asap!

Well it could be turbo seals, and blown check it out when you get a chance, no other ideas.

I would first check shaft play in the turbo. Then just to be safe a blt. Never know, could of popped something off. What amount of boost did you have on it? Stock psi? Are you sure the turbo is burning oil or is it leaky valves or something else from the engine?

May soound like a dumb question. Have to spark plugs been changed recently. Like past 2 weeks.

checked for shaft play just as i got off work in the parking lot my boss let me use his tools. sure enough it was the turbo. couple drops of oil in the inlet and the compressor wheel had both side/side and in/out play. i have a 14b in my garage practically new and i just ordered an install kit today for it so it should be replaced by thursday.
