i got a couple of questions my friend wants to know, i have my opinion and he has his, by your knowledge guys can you please answer the following questions.

1) When a car's idling is your turbo still spinning
2) When cars idling is oil flowing into your turbo?
3) If I have a exhaust leak and im running the car extra hard to see if i boost am i putting twice as much pressure on the turbo for it too spool?
4) If im leaking oil from my oil feed line to the turbo some not alot can i get major shaft play?
5) Am I suppose to boost on a new turbo that hasnt been pre primed with oil?
6) Whats the mileage to break in a turbo
7)Can a majorly dented oil pan cause crank case pressure on the turbo?
8) How much to rebuild a T28 turbo with lots of shaftplay?
9) Name 3 locations of people who rebuild turbos in Socal
10) how much do they charge?

I know these questions might seem dumb, or not for the people who dont know but its just for a friend who keeps insisting on all these things. :dsm:

Wow Dude! Well I field most of them.

Yes, the turbo is spinning when the car is idlingand oil is flowing through it at times when the vehicle is running.

No, an exhaust leak will not put any strain on the turbo. It will cause extra lag if the leak is before the turbo. A charge air leak(boost leak) will cause the turbo to run at greater pressure ratios. This can be harmfull depending on amount of pressure being run and size of leak.

No will not develop shaft play from oil seapage at the turbo. It just makes a mess.

You should always prime a turbo, before starting the vehicle.

There s not set mileage for break-in of a turbo. Many don't even feel it is needed. I like to put about 100 miles on a new turbo before boosting it.

Not sure about the dented oil pan. I have never heard of it putting crankcase pressure on the turbo itself. You will notice extra crankcase pressure if oil starts spewing out of your breather.

A rebuild on a T-28 could be anywhere between $250 and the cost of a new turbo depending on what it needs.

Do a Google search on turbo shops in Cali. I'm sure there are several. I know ATP is one.

I just wanted to add that a dented oil pan could cause low oil pressure/flow to the whole motor, including the turbo, because it might block oil flow into the pickup tube. The pickup tube normally sits about one inch above an undented oil pan.

I agree with everything except for this one. If the leakage is caused by a leaky line or bad copper crush washer then no, it should not cause shaft play. However, if it's caused by either high oil pressure or poor oil return capacity (due to problem with the return line or excessive crankcase pressure), then yes.
