So i found my leak. I thought originally it was leaking from the oil return line on the turbo, but on closer inspection its actually leaking from the oil supply line on the turbo, and leaking all over the hot side which is where im getting my smell from and noticing burning oil. Now my question is, im going to be taking the line off to see if its simply missing a crush washer or if the threads are jacked up, but my question is, If i disconnect the oil supply line, is it under pressure? I'm wondering if i need to drain the oil from the engine or weather i can get by with just pulling it and leaving a drip pan under the car? ideas?
 
Its not "under pressure" but it will flow some oil out so be prepared to clean up a small mess. I had to change my oil supply line from the head and put it on the turbo first, so i had to use my finger LOL to plug the head so it wouldn't drip out oil. It wasn;t gushing at all.
 
Ok, so i should basically allow for what, like half a quart to flow? I also have copper crush washers to use on it. So hopefully the issue is simple and that its just missing the washers or they need to be replaced. Currently waiting for the car to cool down as I was at school earlier this morning. Thanks!
 
It doesnt drip much at all. You will need a couple of shop towels thats about it. Just make sure you clean the mating surfaces of where the crush washers go for a tight seal.
 
Hmm.. interesting development, I removed the bolts securing the turbo to the turbo manifold so i could get my hands in to thread the bolt into the turbo housing, and as I suspected, there was no crush washer. I cleaned up the mating surfaces, installed a copper crush washer and re-installed. When the engine was running and I was checking for leaks it seems that its leaking worse now then it was before. Before it was a few drops here and there, but now its a steady drip per second. Its still comming out of the oil supply line, so im thinking that I'll take the crush washer off, re-clean the turbo hot side and re-install the plug by itself with no washer, and tighten it down.
 
Also discovered that the metal gasket that connects the turbo to the exhaust mani has a crack in each side of it, one of them is pretty damn big, like you can see daylight through it. So, looks like its gasket time too :D
 
You need two crush washers per banjo fitting. It sounds like you're only using one.

As for the turbo gasket blowing out, get OEM bolts, and the OEM lock washers. You need 2 washers per bolt, and they stack up with the sides opposite the ones with the marks facing each other. People just using bolts to secure their turbos, and using lesser-grade bolts is why they seize and the gaskets blow out. You'll also need the nozzle ring that goes between the two, if it will fit in your turbo. Nice thick anti-seize will also help prevent the bolts from seizing.
 
ok, i found the one crush washer that was between the bolt head and the banjo fitting, and im guessing there needs to be two? I had put on the second one a little while ago and it was worse than before. Also, the exhaust mani is using a crush washer per bolt, they were alittle hard to get undone at first, but taking them off the second time it was a breeze. Anyone know the proper torque for those bolts by the way?
 
If it is in fact a banjo fitting, you need two crush washer total. One between the bolt & the banjo & then one between the banjo & turbo.

If one was missing & you just installed one new one in the missing location, its likely the origional one is now leaking. Crush washers are one time use, if you re-use, they will probably leak. You need to install two new crush washers. Also verify all 4 mating surfaces are clean & don't have an imperfections (ie marks, scratches, etc). Also make sure your using the correct sized crush washer.

Also, can you verify exactly where the source of the leak is? (to make sure it is a crush washer issue & not just a bad feed line, etc)
 
Well, round two was a loss. Tried putting on an aluminum flat washer on the bottom of the bolt to try and seal it alittle better. That didnt work. Started it up, same thing, started pouring oil.

I cannot verify where on the bolt housing it is leaking from. I know that the turbo side where it mounts to has several gouges in it, and ive tried using a flat washer with more space to try and plug them up. I'll take a photo of the area in a sec and upload it so you guys have a better idea.
 
Here are the pics, you can see on the 3rd one that the mating surface is all effed up. Also, is this even the right bolt that was in there?

Are you sure its not the oil line itself leaking? Check for cracks where the line is mated to the banjo fitting. Because it shouldn't keep leaking with new crush washers.

EDIT- nevermind, just saw the pics after u posted. Your center section is all fugded up. That's your leak right there.
 
That surface is fine, there is just old copper crush washer stuck to it. This happens from reusing them when you're not supposed to. The crush washers need to be copper and the proper size. The bolts holding the turbo on don't use crush washers, they use TWO special lock washers per bolt.
 
I looked at the oil line, and there is a segment that looks like the previous owner cut a bad section out and bridged it with vaccum line and hose clamps, but the leak isnt coming from there. I'll re-check the fitting and see if there is any cracks that I missed the first time around.

yea, im in the process of acquiring a 20g or 50 trim to replace this eBay piece of shit with. I figure that's where my leak it coming from, those gouges look pretty damn deep. I suppose i'll have to deal with them for now until i can get a viable replacement.
 
Welp, i finally gave up. After trying every type of washer I have access to in my garage, I couldnt get the leak to stop. Im guessing the gouges in the turbo housing are simply too deep for me to seal without adding some JB weld, which im not sure if I want to do as It can harm the turbo if I'm not extremely careful. So, i'm going to just deal with the leaking for now, and work on getting a replacement turbo, so thanks for your help guys!
 
Jb weld will not work for a seal like that..It may turn to white powder being that close to the exhaust manifold, and turbine housing.

You could pull the turbo off, plug up that hole, and grind the section around that oil supply hole flat..To mate with the supply line.

If it's not your daily, say Eff it, and wait till you can get another turbo installed...Also a oil fitting may help..It threads into the supply hole, and then the oil supply line threads onto that fitting..
 
Bud, that oil fitting sounds like it would work. Would i be able to find something like that at my local parts store? Also, any pics that anyone has so that I have a base to work off of? Nice idea bud!

Nevermind on the pics, i found a few on google so that I know what i'm looking for.
 
I wouldn't just deal with it leaking. A steady stream of oil like that will make for a nice fire, being near the exhaust. Do these turbos have any kind of flare inside of that hole?
 
Ok, any idea on what its called? size wise anyway? As for the fire hazard, i've been going out there and checking on it every hour just to make sure that nothing is getting hotter instead of cooler. Also, i'm not even sure, but does synthetic oil actually have a flash point?
