how much should you be charged, say if you wanted to slap a big 16 in place of your 14b? a turbo shop quoted me 250-300 sound good?

That sounds right if there is no possible way you can manage to do it yourself. That's a waste of money, though. Try to do it yourself and spend that money on something else?

exactly, paying for a turbo install is stupid. its too easy, it will take an hour maybe an hour in a half of work w/2 peeps

$250-300??? That is insane. SBR only wants $100 for an install. So if you cant do it yourself you need to find a cheaper shop. Damn that price is unheard of. You should really try and do it yourself. If your not going to learn how to work on these cars, your going to go bankrupt in no time :p . These cars are real high maintance. One thing will lead to another. If you can keep up with them youll be alright :talon:

Bro its going to take more than an hour to hour and a half. I've done it many times and the shortest time I've cut is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Thats with only some minor set backs and hand tools. I can see 2 hours with air tools.

But yeah, you should definitly try to do it yourself. Or find someone that knows what they're doing, give him $50 and a couple of brews then lend a hand to learn something. Its really a unbolt and bolt back on procedure.

I'm with everyone else, there is no need to pay at all. It's very simple. Hell if you were in the area i would come down and keep an eye on you for a #4 supersized from Burger King, No onions, extra pickles, fries and fruit punch.

I'm thinking about doing that sometime soon and the only fear I have is if the bolts are rusted and break. The space is tight and won't be easy to fix them.

This has actually been discussed many times. The good shops ALL charge $250 to $350. Mitsu will want $400. A poor shop, or do it yourself job is $100 or less. What's the difference?

Well, you see every part that comes off the turbo has a gasket to properly seal. The good shops and Mitsu will replace them all and guarentee no leaks. While most of us doing it ourselves, myself included, do NOT replace the gaskets and try to reuse them as best we can.

What results is that most people have a small exhaust leak afterward.

Don't forget the bushings and gaskets on the water lines and oil lines... They to need careful attention to insure you won't leak anything.

Don't get me wrong, I believe in doing it yourself, a friend and I changed my cars 14b to a evo3 16g taking 6 hours to do it for the first time. And we re-used gaskets... But I do have a small exhaust leak now...

And if you're going to do it yourself, while the engine is hot from just running it, crack the manifold bolts (to the turbo), and at least the one O2 housing bolt that you'll be able to get to if not replacing it...

The shop seems to be real nice he has like 8 supras with like 30k in them in the lot and a couple of SR20det swaps, some vr4's. i was going to do it myself at first but i started to have second thoughts. And the only dsmer's around me that have wrench knowledge are rather arrogant bastards so i choose not to deal with them. But if anybody is in my area and is good with a wrench or has more confidence then me PM me

Well, I guess thats too bad bro. If you would move to Brooklyn, I will help you out. I've helped countless buddies with their turbos.

Man if it took you 2 hours and a half to install your turbo fastest time, you need to do it more often, it takes roughly 45 mins... It took me less than 2 hours installing my T3/T4 50 trim with the whole kit, and this is a direct bolt on, and yes I have been with my friends when we do a evo 16 on his 1g. it is cake, you put it on opposite of how you take off a 14B, the turbo is simular in just about everything, its just a little bigger.

EDIT: I forgot to say the hardest time I had was moving my dipstick, :p which you wont have to do...

AND did I mention that it is a DIRECT BOLT-ON... it fits the same way.

Not sure but i think he means pulling the stock turbo off and then replacing it. The fastest i've done one in is a little over 2 hours, and i've done it several times.
