Turbo help! Need advice

Hi,
I purchased a ebay 16g installed it and blew the oil seals due to my own stupidity. I left the little plastic covering on the oil return line hole and installed the return line. ran the car for about 3 min and noticed all the oil. Shut it down and tore it apart and found out that I am an idiot. Ok so, took the plastic peice off put it all back together and it smokes like there is no tomorrow. Oil seals blown

Well here is my real question. I imagine it is not worth it to rebuild so I found this 16g turbo on craigslist. It is used. But how can i tell if it is authentic or ebay. I have pictures the guy sent me.
He said he wants about 170 but is willing to work out a price with me.
This is the email he sent

"yes i still have the 16g. no shaft play... didnt buy it new but it was on a friends of mines 1g and when he gave it to me it it only had about 35,XXX on it and i only used it for about 5k miles or so until i took my entire car apart... had no problems with leaks or anything of that nature when i took it off of the motor
. had quick spool up and was fun to drive having on the car. ill attach a couple of pics so u can see whats on it.. it has the stock manifold on it, 02 housing with 02 sensors, stock return line and a j pipe so take a look, let me know what ya think.. i only want like 180 or so.. but if ## interested maybe we can work something out, im easy going. "

Its authentic. Fake say something cheesy like "turbocharger", the real ones will always say the td05 on the top and numbers on the bottom of the compresor cover decoding which turbocharger it is.

If the turbo you are looking at getting has play you can rebuild it for cheap. Just make sure the wheel didn't get damaged or contact the housing.
You don't need to get it balanced as long as you follow the directions.

This is a good kit to use and it's the one I used to rebuild mine.

For the price that's good. Is it ONLY the turbo or the whole setup with the o2 housing and manifold?

Is there any way to tell if it is good besides checking for shaft play and looking at the fins?


The guy is actually willing to trade that turbo for my Optima Redtop that is brand new.

That seems like a mighty fine price for that whole set up. Well if the turbo is good. If ya do do the trade for the battery, a 40 dollar walmart battery would do ya just fine till you can replace it. And if all you need is the turbo you could sell the o2 housing, manifold, j pipe, and lines on CL and make your money back to buy that new optima. Also you can sell your burnt turbo on CL if your not gonna rebuild it. Make a little of your money back on it. Wish ya luck and good fortune;D
