So I bought a b16g turbo on ebay that said it needed to be rebuilt. He said there was no other damage. The compressor wheel has two gaps between the fins and the housing that are larger than the other gaps between the fins. The exhaust housing also has a pretty large crack from the wastegate port out. The bearings are shot as expected with a lot of shaft play. Could the bad bearing cause the fins to look short like they rubbed off if they didn't?

2 questions
Do I need to replace the compressor wheel or will this work?

Will the exhaust housing need to be replaced?

Thanks for the help!

Exhaust housing needs to be replaced. The cracks will only get worse and lead to leaks which will kill spoolup time and how much boost you can push.

Not sure about the compressor wheel, though.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but getting that turbo to it's "optimum efficiency" is going to end up costing you more than it is to buy a brand new one.

LOTS of shaft play = comp wheel hitting the housing = comp wheel getting nicked = 1 big nono.

I wouldn't trust that turbo at all. Make a cool desk lamp out of it or something

oh, but to be constructive, I would NOT reuse hte CHRA in that thing, nor the turbine housing. YES, the housing can be welded, but the different expansion rates of the cast and whatever metal rod is being used for welding, will ultimately fail anyway.

Bright side is, you can still use your comp housing to make the lamp i was talking about before
